This is a unique opportunity to work creatively at the intersection of construction management and computer science-the growing field of digital construction. You will work closely with leading researchers at the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering, the Digital Twin City Centre, and a network of industry partners.
Research environment
The Construction Management and Engineering (CME) division at the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering offers a creative, innovative, and inclusive research environment, with a strong focus on construction and project management, leadership, and digital construction. With a robust digital profile, our vision is to investigate and develop tools, processes, and methods that support organizations and people-always in close collaboration with industry. This project is part of the Digital Twin City Centre (dtcc.chalmers.se), offering access to a large and supportive partner network.
Project overview
This PhD project focuses on creating digital twins of construction sites to enable data-informed and sustainable management. You will explore how to integrate operational data (such as 3D scans, images, and sensor data) into a VR-based virtual copy of the site, allowing remote comparison between as-planned, current, and as-built models. The project aims to support proactive, dynamic site management using 4D BIM, VR, and AI technologies. Conducted in collaboration with the construction industry through two real-world case projects, the research seeks to advance model-based, sensor-driven decision-making and promote sustainable construction practices.
