Welcome to apply for a PhD student position in the project BIFROST - BIaxial Fatigue Resistance at Oscillating Stress and Temperature!

Are you fascinated by the high-tech aerospace sector, and want to contribute to reliable life predictions and sustainable use of materials for future aero engine programmes? Are you interested in learning more about the physics and mechanics that affect materials performance. Are you prepared to work, both independently and in collaboration with others, in a world-class research environment to achieve challenging goals? Then you could be a good candidate for this project!

Project description
The BIFROST project is funded by Vinnova via the NFFP8 programme and is carried out in close collaboration with GKN Aerospace Sweden AB. High performance gas turbine engines require advanced component manufacturing techniques, and in today's engines cast and forged parts are often welded together. Additive manufacturing could potentially contribute to reduced material usage, high flexibility in the design geometry and tailored anisotropic properties. However, complex geometries are subject to multi-axial stress states and strong thermal gradients in service. Advanced mechanical and microstructural characterisation is required for correct design and life prediction of such components. The BIFROST project will investigate the biaxial thermo-mechanical fatigue resistance of both forged and additively manufactured superalloys for use in aircraft engines. Our uniaxial Thermo-Mechanical Fatigue (TMF) test rig and our advanced biaxial TMF test rig will be the main equipment used together with optical and electron microscopes.

Information about the division and the department
You will work in the Materials Technology Research Group in the Division of Engineering Materials at the Department of Industrial and Materials Science. Together with the Division of Materials and Manufacture, we maintain a well-equipped laboratory and also have access to complementary equipment within the Chalmers Materials Analysis Laboratory (CMAL).

Major responsibilities
Your main responsibility as a PhD student is to carry out your own research. This includes reviewing current knowledge in the field, performing and analysing experiments, developing scientific concepts and communicating research results both orally and in writing. In addition to the research project, you will attend advanced courses within the Graduate School of Materials Science. The position will also involve teaching and other duties for 10-20% of the working time. You will be employed by Chalmers (full-time temporary employment).

Read more about doctoral studies at Chalmers here.

Qualifications
An appropriate background is a Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering or Applied Physics with a focus on Materials Science or similar.

You have excellent communication skills in both written and spoken English. Communication skills in Swedish or a desire to learn Swedish would be an advantage.

You have a genuine interest in designing, performing and analysing experiments, and relating the results to theory to solve complex problems. You will work independently and take responsibility for the progress and quality of your work, but you will also work collaboratively and interact with research students in related disciplines. Finally, you will be committed to the dissemination of results and knowledge within existing and new networks.

Contract terms
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years.
