Project title
On the importance of the hemostatic pathway in ischemic stroke
Job assignments
Stroke is the second most common cause of death worldwide and the major cause of chronic adult disability. Despite this, there are few studies on stroke compared to other common diseases. Ischemia is the most common cause of stroke, and blood clot formation is a key mechanistic event in ischemic stroke. Therefore the main overall aim of this PhD project is to test the hypothesis that the hemostatic pathway is of importance for stroke occurrence and/or poor post-stroke outcome. The cornerstone for the project is our large clinical sample, the Sahlgrenska Academy Study on Ischemic Stroke (SAHLSIS). An important part of this PhD project is the 7-year follow-up on participants in SAHLSIS with an extensive protocol that includes registration of recurrent vascular events, functional outcome, and testing of cognitive functions. Both plasma protein measurements and genetic analyses will be performed. Furthermore, within the framework of Genome Wide Association Studies (GWAS), there will be an opportunity to seek loci that regulate plasma levels of hemostatic proteins.
Because the project is translational, there is also a possibility to perform experimental studies. These include molecular studies to functionally characterize genetic variants that show association to stroke, outcome or protein levels. The role of DNA methylation at promoters is largely unexplored for genes encoding hemostatic factors, as is the relationship between promoter methylation and the simultaneous presence of gene variations. Opportunities will therefore exist to evaluate such epigenetic mechanisms involved in regulating expression of hemostatic genes.
The group has an extensive network. We have close collaboration with Professors Arne Lindgren, Bo Norrving and Olle Melander at Lund University. Together we conduct a GWAS and candidate gene association studies. We are also members of "the International Stroke Genetics Consortium" (ISGC), and participate in several ISGC projects, including a GWAS. The "Stroke Centrum Väst", a newly established research center for collaboration and knowledge sharing among stroke researchers in Region Västra Götaland, University of Gothenburg and Chalmers, will further enrich the translational and interdisciplinary research environment.
Eligibility
The general entry requirements are fulfilled if you have either 1, a second cycle degree (usually described as a masters degree) or 2, completed courses at an academic level corresponding to at least 240 education credits. At least 60 of these credits must be at second cycle level. 60 credits is equal to one year of full-time studies. You also need to fulfill the specific entry requirements which is an English language requirement; Engelska B.
Assessment
After the application deadline has passed, an initial assessment of the candidates eligibility is made at the faculty office and sent to the project supervisor for selection. The process can then take up to 6 months before a candidate is selected.
