hela Sverige Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment
The Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment is working with applied environmental science, with a national responsibility for assessing the condition of Swedish surface waters with respect to water chemistry, pollution and aquatic biota. The research focuses on geochemical and hydrological processes, aquatic ecology and biodiversity, microbial ecology as well as on environmental chemistry and aquatic ecotoxicology. The department has about 150 employees, of which approximately half are researchers/doctoral students and the other half are technical and administrative staff.

Description:
Phage-bacteria interactions and specifically the prevalence of phage co-infection in natural settings is poorly understood and accordingly its impact on phage genome evolution remains unknown. This PhD position is a part of an ERC starting grant (MULTIPHAGE) with the main aim to disentangle the evolutionary dynamics of phages. The holder of this position will contribute to developing a deeper understanding of phage-bacteria interactions in freshwater ecosystems. To learn more about our team and research you can check out our webpage
https://www.bionomics-mmlab.com/The prospective student will be engaged in laboratory experiments and bioinformatics analyses of large multi-omics datasets. Major part of the project is focused on metagenomic, single cell genomics, and metatranscriptomic analysis of host-virus dynamics and identifying their infection network in the lake ecosystem. The work tasks also include fieldwork for lake sampling and sample processing as well as experimental manipulations in the laboratory, alternative analytical methods and scientific communication.
Qualifications:
Required:
• Master degree (or equivalent) with specialization in microbiology, microbial ecology, molecular biology, bioinformatics or related area.
• A keen interest in microbial ecology and biological interactions.
• An analytical mindset
• Professional level English.
Desirable:
• Personal suitability for the work tasks, such as good collaboration and problem solving skills, ability to work independently and as a member of a group, and being teachable and flexible will be considered in the assessment of candidates.
• Demonstrated experience of using computer programming languages (UNIX command line and R/python) for data analysis
• Experience in isolation and cultivation of different microorganisms specifically bacteria and phages
• Molecular biology skills
• Experience in scholarly publishing
