The Science Directorate at the European Spallation Source ERIC in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for an Occupational Health and Safety Engineer.

Description of directorate/division

The Environment, Safety & Health (ESH) Division, reporting to the Associate Director of ESH and Quality supports, monitors and assures the implementation of ESS policies, rules, processes, objectives as well as best practices at all levels of the organization in ESH matters. This includes OHS aspects for design, installation and commissioning as well as the future operation of the facility. Presently, there is a team of 12 persons and the division will expand its staff and activities the upcoming years in order to meet the needs of the organisation.

During ESS construction, the Science Directorate within ESS comprises a total of five divisions with currently about 80 members of staff. This core team supports activities related to the design and actual construction of Neutron Scattering Systems, which comprises the instrument suite but also activities related to providing supporting infrastructure such as laboratories and workshops. All activities within the Science Directorate rely to great extend on extensive collaborations amongst not only the European but world-wide neutron scattering user community, which results in a very dynamic and interesting work environment that will deliver a multi-disciplinary research center based on the world's most powerful neutron source.

Description of the position

Though linked to the ESH division, the new position as Occupational Health and Safety Engineer is embedded into the Science Directorate supporting the construction and (initial) operation of Neutron Scattering Systems (NSS) and focusing upon safety issues for the experimental hall, laboratories, workshops and the instruments. Specific to ESS as an international user facility with its different culture, the safety documentation for the operational phase / user program including the technical support and instruments has to be aligned with the general safety objectives of ESS and at the same time has to be simple and clear enough that users (and staff) with varying degree of safety awareness can follow it.

The position includes the following task and responsibilities:

• To develop and write safety procedures for NSS activities in close collaboration with ESH and aligned with the ESS-wide procedures.
• To collect information from the various NSS groups as to how work is performed and assist them in developing procedures to work safely.
• To organize existing documentation and build on it to generate a complete and systematic safety envelope for NSS in collaboration with ESH during the next two years as we prepare for operations.
• To be pro-active in going after information. Interface between NSS and ESH.
• To participate in building up the required rules and guidelines for the ESS framework of OHS, including templates and training
• To support with different OHS services, such as Regulations & Requirements and risk assessments
• To participate in the implementation of a healthy safety culture at ESS.

Qualifications
You have a well-developed ability to listen, consult others and to communicate proactively with a high level of integrity. Building wide and effective networks of contacts both inside and outside the organization comes naturally to you. Strong preference given to candidates with previous experience in safety at a neutron user facility or other research infrastrctures. You have basic knowledge of the European Safety Legislation.Your English skills need to be very good in both verbal and written form.

Duration & Location
The position is permanent with six months initial probationary period, the position is to be filled as soon as possible. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden.
