Are you a master student planning to write your Master Thesis during spring 2020? Join us on our journey into the future #Siemens

Be part of an open and dynamic workplace where professional and personal development is high on the agenda. By making sustainable energy solutions more cost effective, developing new technologies for the future's smart industry and electrifying passenger and freight transport, we make reality of our vision of a sustainable world.

We are now looking for a student to take on the assignment:
Modeling and criterion formulation of The Morton Effect.

The assignment:

The master thesis work will be carried out at the department within gas turbine R&D at Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery in Finspång responsible for rotor dynamics. The team consists of 14 engineers who are not only responsible for rotor dynamics but also blade dynamics and the secondary air systems in our gas turbines (Power output: 15-57 MW). Our main working tasks are development of existing and future engines. We also give support to other departments such as manufacturing, sales, commissioning and service.

During the prototype testing of the SGT-750 we ran into a phenomenon that wasted a lot of time and money. It was not difficult to identify the problem to be the Morton effect. For many decades this dreaded problem have been avoided by conservative designs, hard-learned and not publicly shared experience. In the last few years the Morton effect has been studied more carefully and has also, after many failed attempts, been included in some rotor dynamics specific codes. This is still a new, state-of-the-art, difficult, and far from straight-forward calculation. The ultimate goal of this endeavor is to reach a level of understanding that may be condensed to a general design guideline and perhaps a generally accepted criterion to fulfil. The Morton effect is an issue that involves a lot of challenging and different engineering aspects such as rotor dynamics, heat transfer, tribology, general journal bearing and rotor shaft design.

We would prefer the work to commence in January/February 2020 and to be finished by the summer. If you are challenged by and are interested in this Master thesis project, please contact us for more information.

Your Profile:
The project fits you who...
* Have studied Structure dynamics
* Have an analytical and practical mindset
* Having Gas turbine knowledge is a merit, but not a requirement
