About the role:

As we continue our transition into Steady State Operations, ESS is now looking to appoint a skilled and proactive Group Leader to head our Mechanical Systems and Maintenance Services group within the Operations Division. In this critical role, you will oversee the operation, maintenance, and development of mechanical systems - including water cooling, HVAC, and instrument air systems - to ensure their reliable functionality and compliance with required specifications.

As Group Leader, you will oversee of mechanical system operations while providing maintenance services to technical teams that support ESS's cutting-edge scientific mission. You will manage a team of professionals, lead external contractor agreements, ensure seamless interfacing with other technical systems, and develop forward-looking operational frameworks such as the group's on-call system. This leadership role offers a dynamic opportunity to contribute to one of the world's foremost research facilities in a highly collaborative and multidisciplinary environment.

Day-to-day, you will:

• Organise and lead the work of the group members, acting as the line manager for your team. This includes setting goals, leading performance evaluations, managing training programs, and hiring as needed to grow group capacity.
• Ensure the operational readiness and maintenance of ESS's mechanical systems - including water cooling, HVAC, and instrument air systems - so they meet specified requirements and safety standards.
• Take responsibility for operation, reliability, and maintenance of the systems in the scope of the group to ensure that they interface seamlessly with other technical systems.
• Provide maintenance services to technical teams across the Machine and Science Directorates, coordinating efforts to meet diverse operational demands.
• Manage external contracts for maintenance technician services and additional capacity to provide effective support for ESS teams.
• Organise maintenance tasks carried out by group members and contractors, coordinating closely with the central work coordination and planning team and Control Room Operations teams to prioritise and execute work efficiently.
• Improve and develop the on-call setup for the group by cross-training team members.
• Ensure the right competencies are in place to support safe and efficient operations.
• Organise and drive system ownership hand over from project deliveries to operational systems
• Keep maintenance contracts up to date as required.

About you

For this role, we need a suitably qualified and experienced person. Ideally, you are an experienced leader with a strong technical background in mechanical systems, including water cooling, HVAC, or pressurised air systems, and a proven ability to maintain and operate large-scale infrastructure. As a Group Leader, you bring both technical expertise and team management skills to foster a collaborative work environment while ensuring the operational readiness of critical systems.

As a skilled problem-solver, you are someone who excels at managing day-to-day operations while planning strategically for the future. With experience in managing teams, handling contracts, and collaborating with diverse stakeholders, you must be able to effectively balance immediate priorities with long-term goals. Your technical insight and leadership ability inspire those around you to deliver their best work in a fast-paced, safety-focused environment.

As Mechanical Systems Group Leader, you will have the opportunity to play a pivotal role in ensuring that one of the world's foremost research facilities operates at the highest standards across its critical mechanical systems. Strong interpersonal and communication skills define your approach to building highly functional teams as they allow you to interact effectively with technical systems teams and management stakeholders. You therefore need to have the organisational mindset needed to contribute to - or develop - structured workflows and documentation to optimise operational processes.

The working language of ESS is English, but the ability to speak another European language would be an advantage.
