The Programme Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Mechanical Engineer.
Description of directorate/division
The Design Division provides the skills, tools and the resources for the design engineering work at ESS and its collaboration. Design office works cross-functional through the organisation and is a service to the different projects.

Design division consists of both Product Data Management, CAD Management and support personnel as well as the designers needed for the process of designing, building and maintaining the ESS site and machine. 
Description of main responsibilities
As a Mechanical Engineer in the ESS the Design Division, you will follow the design and construction of ESS. The Design Division will work within a number of applications such as- cryogenic applications, radio frequency, safety, reliability and ultra-high vacuum technology are just a few of the key words related to this position.

 This post will involve:
• Design engineering.
• Engineering activities from requirements to installation.
• Mechanical and thermo-mechanical calculations using FEM software packages.
• Design of components for accelerators, targets and instruments.
• Writing technical specifications, performing market surveys and price enquiries to find appropriate suppliers.
• Supervision of technical staff for prototyping, series production, and follow-up of supply contracts.   
Qualifications

• Master of Science or equivalent in mechanical engineering and/or nuclear engineering.
• A minimum of 5 years experience in the implementation of engineering activities as functional descriptions, requirement definitions, design (conceptual, pre-detailed and detailed studies), and definitions of complex interface systems.
• Between 2 and 5 years experience in mechanical design, FEA/FEM thermo-mechanical design and cryogenics. Expertise in using 3D CAD software, preferably CATIA. 
• Experience with (circular or straight) superconducting accelerators is desirable, but not a prerequisite. 
• Demonstrated ability to work with others and to communicate efficiently.
• Great care and accuracy are required. 
• Experience of working in an international environment is essential.
• Excellent oral and written English skills are a prerequisite; knowledge of other European languages would be an advantage.

Start date
The position is to be filled as soon as possible but by 1st August 2012 at the latest.

The European Spallation Source ESS AB will design, build and operate a multi-disciplinary, large-scale research infrastructure based on the world's most powerful neutron source. ESS will provide scientists with unique and powerful neutron scattering instruments for the study of a large range of materials - from polymers and pharmaceuticals to membranes and molecules. The ESS project is partnered by 17 European countries, and hosted by Sweden and Denmark. The ESS will be built in Lund, Sweden, by a collaboration of European scientists and engineers. ESS is planned to produce the first neutrons by 2019. When the facility is in full operation 2025, ESS has around 450 employees.
