Background of thesis project

This thesis is suitable for an engineering student in mechanical engineering, computational mechanics, computer science or equivalent with an interest in construction equipment, GUI development, software coding and virtual simulation. The desired start date is Feb 2024.

Within research and development (R&D) firms like Volvo CE, when dealing with topics requiring intricate CAE calculations, there is often a need to utilize software that enables us to validate and interpret various facets of a system in response to alterations in its parameters. Commercial finite element programs are designed with a wide variety of tools and options to suit the needs of many different applications. Nevertheless, this isn't always feasible due to the substantial effort required to acquire proficiency in both the software and its associated theoretical principles. Employing fully developed solvers such as ANSYS, ROMAX, and AMESIM can enable the resolution of generic problems without the necessity of a deep comprehension of the underlying concepts, as these software tools manage the intricacies on your behalf. One way or another, a fundamental understanding of concepts such as meshing, boundary conditions, and the types of analyses is essential for working in the field of Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE).

To address this, "VPDCAL" (VPD calculator) can be developed at Volvo CE, D&E, ESK. Meaning, "VPDCAL" can provide a toolbox based on Graphical User Interface, commonly abbreviated as GUI to solve CAE related problems but with a clear connection between the methods used and the governing theoretical concepts. GUIs provide visual aids to users and create a familiar environment even for those without prior experience working with CAE problems in a user-friendly mode. GUIs featuring efficient workflows enhance organizational processes and are accessible to a wide range of users.

This thesis work aims to study and build a GUI based CAE simulation App ("VPDCAL") for addressing the NVH issues in powertrain of VOLVO CE machines. This work mainly takes place at the Division of Driveline & electromobility Systems at the Technical Center in Eskilstuna.

Suitable background

The ideal student(s) will possess good communications skills in English (written and verbal), show a high level of initiative, be self-driven, have good analytical capabilities and have a high interest in computer-aided engineering (CAE) solutions for NVH on powertrains, building App using Python and computer programming.

The successful candidate should have strong computer programming skills and should be willing to work at the Division of Driveline & electromobility Systems at the Technical Center in Eskilstuna.

Description of thesis work
This thesis work aims to study and build a GUI based CAE simulation App ("VPDCAL") for addressing the NVH issues in powertrain of VOLVO CE machines.

The main activities are:
Initially, study/collect and pre-process the related knowledge on adressing the NVH issues and development of powertrain in the driveline & electromobility organization
Understand the importance of GUI based CAE simulation App in D&E organization and create an easy-to-use graphical user interface using Python App designer which does not require advanced technical knowledge to users.
Recommend a potential solution if any
Publish the outcome in an international journal if applicable
