This doctoral position at Chalmers University of Technology offers a unique opportunity to work on cutting-edge research in digital transformation and systems integration for smart ports. With secondments at prestigious institutions like the Technical University of Denmark (DTU-Compute) and Danfoss Power Electronics, you'll develop innovative solutions for integrating digital and energy systems. This role is perfect for candidates passionate about advancing the resilience and sustainability of port energy systems through pioneering modeling and digital integration frameworks.

Information about the division and the department
The candidate will be located at the division of Physical Resource Theory, Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden. The division carries out research and education on potential solutions to our major environmental challenges, e.g. global warming and sustainable use of land and other resources. At our division we focus on research in the field of technical and socio-economic systems addressing the challenges involved in the transition into a sustainable and low carbon society for a growing poulation, where a range of different quantitative and qualitative methods can be applied on our reseach topics. The ambition is to build challenge-driven scientific excellence by crossing traditional boundaries and increase the level of multi-disciplinarity in research. The division has around 50 staff members, faculty and PhD-students with diverse expertise, including engineers, natural and social scientists. We also offer courses in areas related to our research.

Major responsibilities
The Ports as Energy Transition Hubs (POTENT) Marie Skodowska-Curie Actions Doctoral Network is an exciting initiative aimed at exploring how ports can accelerate the clean energy transition in Europe. Led by Copenhagen Business School, this network seeks 15 qualified PhD candidates with interests in Energy Infrastructure, Maritime Economics, Ports, and Data Science.

This Doctoral student will be based at Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden. The research will focus on developing innovative solutions for integrating digital and energy systems. Key activities include:

• Develop a multi-layer modeling architecture integrating AADL for structural analysis and Modelica/FMI for dynamic simulation.
• Design and implement resilience metrics and assessment methodologies for smart port energy systems.
• Perform system modeling and simulation to support the clean energy transition and resilience evaluation.
• Collaborate with industry partners to validate the framework through practical case studies.
• Contribute to open science by sharing models, results, and documentation.

The expected contributions are:

1. Theoretical:

• Novel multi-model framework for port energy systems
• Extended resilience assessment methodology
• Integration patterns for AADL and Modelica

2. Practical:

• Tool suite for port energy system analysis
• Validated assessment methods
• Industry-ready implementation guidelines
