Lab Manager for the Metabolomics platform, SLU Umeå

www.slu.seWe are seeking a Lab Manager for the metabolomics platform at Umeå Plant Science Centre (www.upsc.se), which consists of state-of-the-art mass spectrometry equipment ? such as GC/TOFMS, LC-QTOFMS, LC/TOFMS, LC/LTQ-OrbitrapMS and LC/TQMSMS instruments ? and staff with high levels of expertise in using them. The platform also provides expert support in data analysis and handling large datasets from the Computational Life Science Cluster (CLiC), Umeå University. To date, more than 50 000 samples of diverse types (ranging from plant samples to human plasma and cell cultures) have been analyzed at the platform.
Duties:
The lab manager will have the overall responsibility for managing the platform as it is developed into a leading facility within the framework of the national metabolomics initiative, based at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences and Umeå University. The work will involve, inter alia:
Organizing the platform, including:
Delegating work, budgeting and liaising with the platform steering group, scientific director, co-director and clients.
Establishing routines for documenting platform operations to ensure traceability of laboratory actions.
Organizing and maintaining structures for data handling, transfer (processing workflow) and storage.
Optimizing day-to-day and longer term operation with respect to staff, laboratory resources and customer needs.
Overseeing instrumentation service and log book maintenance.
Performing metabolomics analysis.
Qualifications: The successful candidate should have a PhD in analytical chemistry, biochemistry or similar discipline. A relevant background and experience of metabolomics analysis and mass spectrometry is highly desirable. The applicant should have good teamwork and communication skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate platform employees. As the position includes organization and management of the platform, personal characteristics are important. Previous experience of managing laboratories, academic or industrial, is a merit.
