hela Sverige In this position you will be engaged in research on injector technologies, spray formation and combustion for Heavy Duty Diesel engines. You will, under a four year period, be leading doctoral studies as a PhD candidate in a project within the CERC (Combustion Engine Research Center) at Chalmers. The work will be well connected to the advanced engineering program at Volvo preparing for products in the 2025-2030 time frame. After completed project and hopefully a PhD degree, the position is adopted for the internal Volvo needs.
The position is located in the Combustion group within Powertrain Advanced Engineering department. The team is responsible for bringing forth and analysing new engine solutions and associated technologies with focus on thermodynamics and combustion. The group, today 14 in size, is a multi-functional group including 1D and 3D simulation and testing in both single cylinder and complete engines. We are working in a creative environment with both advanced tools for simulations and testing, and demanding physical and thermodynamic problems. We have frequent cooperation and interaction with other groups within Volvo Group Trucks Technology, other parts of the Volvo Group, suppliers and with universities.
About the project
We are faced by the challenges to further improve fuel efficiency and reduce CO2, NOx and particulate emissions. This includes further improvement of the Diesel engine, adaption and optimization for new truck and powertrain concepts, including hybrid drivelines, and the development of alternative fuels technologies. Early conceptual designs are investigated and characterized through tight cooperation between testing and simulations. Selection and optimization of systems and components are to a large extent done by the guidance of simulation results in collaboration with project leader, system responsible, component responsible, and sometimes suppliers. Fundamental knowledge of key processes is essential for making the right choices of components and designs in developing our future products.
In the planned research project the aim is to investigate design aspects of fuel injector nozzle's effect on spray formation, utilizing different injector technologies to alter the injection rates, including multiple injection schemes, and further explore how the resulting flames interact with the geometrical features of the combustion chamber, mostly define by the piston.
The project will have links to other projects at Chalmers, e.g. projects on spray and combustion modelling, and also have tight connections to the internal AE work at Volvo.
