hela Sverige AstraZeneca is recruiting a Head of Bioscience Metabolism within the Cardiovascular, Renal and Metabolism (CVRM) therapeutic area at AstraZeneca in Gothenburg, Sweden
CVRM Innovative Medicines (IMED) within AstraZeneca is accountable for the discovery and development (up to phase 2) of new drugs in the CVRM arena. The Bioscience Department Metabolism is a critical unit within the CVRM IMED organization, where novel ideas for drugs are to be discovered and developed in a strong cross-functional environment to meet the unmet medical need for patients suffering from Metabolic, Cardiovascular and Chronic Kidney diseases.
This is a principal role in the IMED CVRM, where the job holder has a direct impact on IMED output through effective partnerships and collaborations with internal and external stakeholders. You will have a major impact on strategic development of the IMED CVRM, ensuring that the portfolio is delivered today and that IMED CVRM science and capabilities are fit for future challenges and opportunities.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Lead the IMED CVRM Bioscience Department Metabolism as a role-model leadership figure
* To drive the initiation and progression of a portfolio of IMED projects from pre-clinical to early clinical (Ph2) development and support the IMED CVRM in achieving its business objectives and the delivery of the IMED CVRM strategy
* To achieve scientific excellence at all levels ensuring highest quality research is carried out
* To raise the visibility and profile of CVRM Bioscience within and outside AstraZeneca
* Build and maintain a network with key leading research institutions and scientists
Contributions as member of the IMED CVRMLT
* Support development of winning disease area strategies for the IMED CVRM and drive portfolio value
* Share responsibility for IMED disease area strategy, and the delivery of sufficient positive POP/POC, demonstrating therapeutic relevance, with high probability of successful market access and delivery of valuable new medicines.
* Contribute to the content of the agreed 3-year business plan and execute against it
* Ensure agile response of IMED business plan to significant changes in the external and competitive environment
Key Deliverables
* Drive and coordinate the identification and delivery of the best project opportunities regardless of source
* Achieve scientific leadership in the areas of metabolism research & early development for CVRM
* Build and maintain bioscience capabilities from in vitro to in vivo and ensure the most critical experiments are carried out with high standards
* Continuously monitor the external environment to identify opportunities, threats and risks in a timely manner.
* Ensure that the Bioscience position is fully integrated into the IMED strategy and portfolio reviews.
* Contribute with knowledge and expertise in the activities required to deliver the Disease Area Strategies and Business Plan for the IMED.
* Line manage group of direct reports.

* Collaborate strongly with other IMED Bioscience leads (within and outside IMED CVRM) to identify and exploit intra and cross-IMED opportunities and embed best practice.
* Collaborate closely with peers within and outside the IMED, in particular Bioscience Heart failure, Bioscience Chronic Nephropathy, Translational Science, DMPK, Early Clinical development, Chemistry, Discovery Sciences, Pharmaceutical sciences and Precision medicine group
Talent Management & Development
* Recruit, retain and develop leading scientists to build a world class team.
* Provide high quality feedback and coaching to direct reports (direct and deployed) and mentor key talent in the organization
Essential Requirements
* Preferably PhD / MD, but MD or PhD possible, post-doc experience in Diabetes and/or Metabolic Disorders.
* Will be an internationally recognized Scientist with a proven track record of innovation and milestone delivery in several drug discovery projects or to have provided scientific leadership through academic excellence
* Strong publication track record
* Current academic affiliation (eg adjunct professor) is a plus
* Experience in leading pre-clinical research in the metabolism area
* Proven entrepreneurial and innovation driven leadership abilities in a drug discovery environment with demonstrable knowledge of pre-clinical R&D.
* A strong track record of building successful internal/external partnership and collaboration relationships, demonstrating cultural sensitivity and awareness.
* Experience and excellent understanding of the Therapeutic Area metabolism
* Understanding of payer, regulatory and commercial issues in the pharmaceutical industry.
