The Machine Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Group leader position.

Description of division
The Control System Hardware and Integration Group designs, develops, integrates, commissions and operates the ESS control systems. The integration scope of the group ranges from development of ESS control systems and integration of stakeholder equipment to be controlled, to installation, verification, maintenance and support of the integrated control system. The hardware scope ranges from specialized in-house electronics development, often using community-style development to adaption and configuration of off-the-shelf commercial systems. The technical profile of the group covers a very broad range of engineering disciplines including state-of-the art electronics, industrial automation, distributed control system software (EPICS), power electrical engineering, RF technology and more.

Description of main responsibilities
As group leader of a growing group you are responsible for managing a team of engineers and technicians, for development of the competence, capacity and availability of this team and for the quality of operational results and deliverables from the group.

The position is a line-management position including responsibility for personnel according to Swedish workplace legislation, with duties such as staff performance management, competence development, capacity management, salary setting, etc. of the team. The projected team size is in the order of 20 employees and a variable number of contractors. The team today consists of 11 employees and a handful of contractors.

You are responsible for adaptation, implementation and follow-up of processes and procedures; at ICS we follow a mixed waterfall/agile way of working and due to the many interfaces of ICS we allow a high degree of flexibility in order to adapt processes to our stakeholders.

ICS is implementing a variant of the classical line/project matrix organizational model with some degree of operational project responsibility also applicable to line managers. You are expected to make technical decisions within the team that affect methodology, quality and performance-related issues. This means that you must have good knowledge on technologies relevant for the position.

You are expected to be an active and driving contributor in the ICS management team.

You are expected to travel on average 2 - 5 days per month, primarily within Europe.

Required competencies:

• Sc. in electrical engineering, computer science or similar
• Solid experience from control system development, configuration and operation over a wide range of technologies
• Line management experience with medium sized (7 - 20 resources) teams
• Experience from working in project/line matrix organizations and experience from estimation, planning, resource allocation and execution of project work
• A general understanding of electronics and hardware design
• A general understanding of control systems integration
• Good knowledge of waterfall and agile project management methodologies

The following experiences are considered as beneficial but not required:

• Working within scientific/academic environments
• Experience from EPICS-based control system software or similar
• Experience from industrial automation and software development

As a group leader we expect you to have all the needed leadership and people skills to fulfil the tasks in a high performing and dynamic environment.

ESS is a highly international workplace, the hardware and integration team is no exception. Excellent language skills in English orally and written are mandatory.

Your presentation and language skills are also important to us; you must be able to explain/simplify complex hardware-software interactions and system integration for other developers/users/customers. You have good knowledge of different project methodologies and experience applying them.

It is also important that you show stakeholder focus; you tendency is to put your stakeholders first and you are able to forge lasting relationships based on mutual trust.

Duration & Location
The position is permanent with six months initial probationary period. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden. The position is to be filled as soon as possible.
