The AB Volvo IP department, Volvo Group IP (VGIP), is a group function serving the entire Volvo Group and it consists of three departments; Patents, IP Strategy & Portfolio and IP Legal, Trademark & Design. The Group Directors for the three departments together with SVP Legal & VGIP form the VGIP Management Team that jointly drives the creation and use of IP to support profitability, competitiveness and growth cross products, supply chain and R&D within the entire Volvo Group.

In the position as Group Director Patents you will be responsible for the Volvo Group patent organization and be accountable for the management of all legal patent issues, evaluation of third parties' patents and patent risk evaluations. The patent organization consists of 20 employees in seven countries. The Swedish team, as well as a manager responsible for the global team, report directly to the Group Director. The position offers a global working environment with dedicated and professional colleagues.

You will report to the Senior Vice President, Legal & Volvo Group IP, Group Trucks Technology, in a role with executive management visibility.

The position requires traveling from time to time.

Main Responsibilities
As Group Director Patents your main responsibilities will be to:
• lead, develop and manage the patent team in global patent filing and prosecution, from filed invention disclosure to granted patents in selected countries,
• guide and supervise quality and compliance to established Group IP policies, guidelines, directives, roles, responsibilities and processes,
• drive evaluation and improvement of patent creation processes and patent administration IT systems and tools,
• responsible for the creation of portfolios towards relevant third parties,
• responsible for the evaluation of third party patents and patent risks,
• manage the remuneration process globally and align with national law, union and other relevant stakeholders, and
• drive professional development of each employee and the entire Patent team, and be a key stakeholder in driving patent training globally
• support the IP Portfolio & Strategy work in IP strategy development and IP portfolio creation and use, based on the Volvo Group IP Plan and the implementation thereof in the patent team
• manage the Patent organization's budget, supplier selection and supplier relationship

Minimum Education and Experience
• Technical degree (M.Sc. or higher).
• Strong leadership abilities with solid experience of people management
• Expert knowledge of patent law in the main IP jurisdictions and knowledge of trademark, design and trade secret law
• Strong IP expertise and comprehensive patent attorney capabilities. It is a merit, but not a requirement, to be registered to practice before national / regional patent offices and to have passed the EQE
• Up-to-date knowledge on IP strategies, trends, developments, and practices including in-depth knowledge of technology- and/or IP-based competitiveness
• Good business knowledge and understanding
Critical Competencies and Skills
You need to have a strong personal credibility and a can-do mindset with high drive, energy and be capable of performing multiple duties effectively in a fast paced environment. In addition, strong business acumen, customer focus and entrepreneurial drive are important requirements. Also, documented ability to develop direct reports and building effective teams are key.
The position requires courage and integrity with the ability to navigate in both formal channels and informal networks in organizations. Other pre-requisites for this position are distinctive problem-solving abilities, with cultural awareness and appreciation.

Good English communication skills, both orally and in writing are essential. A good understanding of the automotive businesses and processes is a merit but not a requirement.
