The Department of Wildlife, Fish, and Environmental Studies (WFE), Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), Umeå, is looking for a postdoc with a strong interest in behavioral ecology of cervids and wildlife management. The candidate will work within the ongoing SLU project "Viltsamverkan i brandens spår", a collaborative project between SLU and different landowners and stakeholders (e.g., Sveaskog) aimed at following the ecological effects of the forest fires with in multiple prey-predator systems. The project will be hosted at SLU in Umeå, but will also include longer visits (up to 6 months) at the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research (NINA) in Trondheim and the Inland Norway University for Applied Sciences (INN) in Evenstad.
The department offers a creative, stimulating, and highly international environment and performs internationally recognised research, education, and environmental monitoring in the research areas of animal ecology, aquatic ecology, molecular ecology and restoration ecology (see
https://www.slu.se/en/departments/wildlife-fish-environmental-studies/research/research-areas/). The department has many international employees and well-established national and international collaborations, giving fruitful exchange opportunities.

https://www.slu.se/en/about-slu/work-at-slu/Duties:
The successful candidate will quantify and analyse individual variation in moose behavioural syndromes ("personalities") and quantify whether personality types differ in survival. Additionally, during stays at NINA and INN, s(h)e will investigate how moose personality types, and their calf survival, respond to the presence and activity of wolf, brown bear and harvesting by humans. A crucial part of this project is the application of the findings to forestry and wildlife management and the successful candidate will collaborate with interest groups and end-users in moose management to develop suggestions for revised monitoring and management tools. The candidate will analyse multi-annual individual-based movement, acceleration and survival data linked to environmental data. The candidate will closely collaborate with "Viltsamverkan i brandens spår" as well as other research projects.
During the project, the candidate will closely collaborate with other members of the competence area "Animal Ecology" at WFE as well as will have possibility to supervise students. The successful person will also have opportunities to be involved in wildlife research and develop own research interests related to different aspects of wildlife ecology and management in a multi-species system.
Qualifications:
The successful candidate should hold a PhD in animal ecology or similar field, with strong expertise in and experience with the behavioural ecology and biology of cervids (e.g., behaviour, stress physiology, prey-predator interaction) across different European ecosystems and species. In addition to this broad background, the successful candidate will have a specific background in the field of animal personality, ideally with respect to cervids, and have contributed to the development of this field. S(h)e can also show strong analytical skills and experience with advanced statistical modelling of animal movement and animal behavioural syndromes. Candidates that have already established contacts and/or collaborations with our key partners NINA and INN will be prioritized. A well-established network of other international collaborations will also count as a merit. The successful candidate is a highly motivated, fast-learning, team-oriented candidate with a successful publication record in the field of cervid behavior and personalities. Critical thinking and experience in academic writing and presenting will be fundamental for the fulfilment of the set objectives. Previous field experience with handling large mammals is a big plus. An understanding of the Swedish language is not a requirement, but a strong willingness to learn basic Swedish will be a merit.
As postdoctoral appointments are career-developing positions for junior researchers, we are primarily looking for candidates with a doctoral degree that is three years old at most.
