The European Spallation Source (ESS) is poised to become Europe's flagship neutron research facility, advancing the field of material science using cutting-edge technology. ESS will enable groundbreaking experiments that deepen our understanding of matter and address some of the most pressing global challenges in energy, health, and the environment. As a European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC) uniting 13 member states, ESS is completing its construction phase and transitioning towards full user operations by the end of 2027. We are now seeking an experienced and dynamic Engineering & Infrastructure Director to play a pivotal role in this transformative journey.

Your role:

The ESS organisation is managed by the Director General and its Executive Board of Directors. As of August 2025, ESS has four directorates: Science, Administration, Project and the Operations & Machine Directorate. We will now add a fifth directorate into our organisational structure, which will be called the Engineering and Infrastructure (EID) Directorate. The Engineering and Infrastructure Directorate provides strategic and operational support to ESS through centralised engineering and integration services, information technology, and facility management. At a later stage it is anticipated that the Directorate will also oversee programme and project management.

You will report directly to the Director General and, as a member of the Executive Board, will contribute to the strategic and operational leadership of ESS. As such, your key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

• Providing strategic direction for the Engineering and Infrastructure Directorate to ensure its functions support both the end of the current project phase and future long-term steady-state operations.
• Developing and implementing long-term strategies to maintain and enhance the ESS engineering capabilities, IT infrastructure, and facility management services.
• Ensuring that ESS maintains a high level of multi-disciplinary engineering expertise that addresses both design and field engineering aspects.
• Ensuring the delivery of effective integration services across the facility.
• Ensuring ESS has the necessary software tools, digital infrastructure, security, and governance to support business and technical operations and scientific research.
• Driving initiatives to enhance operational efficiency, sustainability, and safety across the Directorate.
• Managing key stakeholder relationships, including governance bodies, technical advisory committees, and external partners as appropriate.
• Driving effective resource allocation.
• Leading a team of senior managers to ensure alignment with ESS's performance goals and strategic objectives.
• Championing a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.

Working at ESS means contributing to one of the most exciting scientific ventures in Europe. You'll have the opportunity to shape the future of material science using neutrons while addressing critical societal challenges. We offer a collaborative and inclusive workplace in a vibrant, international city known for its rich history and innovation culture.

The position is a 5-year assignment, with the option to renew for a second 5-year term by mutual agreement. Your workplace will be in Lund, Sweden, and full relocation support - including securing work authorisation - is provided if required.

About you:

Your leadership will reflect a balance of technical expertise, operational discipline, and strategic foresight, ensuring that ESS meets its scientific and societal goals. You will be a trusted advisor to the Director General and a key driver of innovation, collaboration, and excellence across the organisation. Therefore, we are seeking an experienced and rigorous leader who can bring:

• A master's degree (or higher) in engineering, physics or a closely related technical specialism.
• Significant leadership experience gained in a large, international, and technically complex organisation.
• A proven track record in engineering complex, bespoke technical systems within a research or industrial setting.
• Deep knowledge of systems engineering principles, integration processes, and best practices for large-scale scientific or industrial facilities.
• The gravitas and industry recognised visibility necessary to understand the complexities of this role.
• Knowledge of IT governance, cybersecurity, and digital transformation in complex organisations.
• Experience of managing stakeholder relationships, including governance bodies and external technical partners.
• Experience in contract negotiations, project management, and resource allocation for large-scale engineering or infrastructure projects.
• A background in collaborating with partner institutions for the delivery of in-kind contributions for successful operations.
• Substantial experience leading and developing teams in a large, complex, international, and fast-paced environment.
• Strong strategic planning, analytical, numerical, and writing skills.
• The capability to work effectively at both strategic and operational levels, ensuring progress and delivering results.

ESS is an English language workplace. Therefore, fluency in English with excellent communication and interpersonal skills is essential. Knowledge of Swedish or another European language would be an advantage.
