Education and research cover a broad spectrum within natural sciences and engineering, as well as architecture, industrial engineering and management, urban planning, work science and environmental engineering. There are about 12,000 full-year undergraduate students, 1,400 postgraduate students and 3,100 employees.
Our work includes the areas Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Fibre and Polymer Technology. We focus on the principles for design, analysis and understanding of molecular systems plus their application on, for example, bioorganic materials, energy transformation processes, the environment and production of chemicals and pharmaceuticals. KTH Chemical Science and Engineering are one of the most active in research among technical faculties in Sweden and we are in the frontline within our areas. We also offer education as Master of Engineering and bachelor's degree.
Ämnesbeskrivning
A PhD position is available in the Division of Biocomposites The research will be conducted in the context of CarboMat – The KTH Advanced Carbohydrate Materials Consortium.
In nature, cellulose is present in the form of cellulose nanofibers providing reinforcement to plant cell walls in trees, and other organisms. There is tremendous potential in development of high-performance composites based on nanostructured cellulose, as exemplified by tough nanopaper, ultra-low density aerogels, nanostructured high-strength foams, inorganic-organic hybrids, nanostructured laminates and hydrogels. The KTH Campus is a world-leading environment with at least 40 people active in different aspects of cellulose nanofiber research. The objective of the current project is to develop novel nanostructured cellulosic materials. In the project, nanofiber network composites will be prepared and characterized with respect to microscopic structure and mechanical properties as well as bio-related functions. There will be opportunity to perform part of the work at leading international research labs.
KvalifikationerKvalifikationer/Behörighet
Interaction with biosciences is of particular interest in the project, although your background is most likely in materials, polymers or engineering physics.
The selected candidate must hold an undergraduate (B.Sc. equivalent) or Master’s degree in materials science, polymer science, engineering physics, or a closely related field. Experience in materials preparation, microscopy or physical property testing is favored, and familiarity with polymers and composites is desirable.
To address its varied work, KTH aims to employ a diversity of talent and thus welcomes applicants who will add to the variety of the University, especially as concerns its gender structure.
