Hereby advertises a position as

Doctoral student in Molecular Physics
for structural studies of antifouling polymer coatings
formally based at the Department of Physics, Chemistry and Biology (IFM)

Background
At the division of Molecular Physics, we conduct fundamental and applied research on biologically relevant problems in surface- and nano-science, with applications in biosensors, biomaterials, medicine and marine biofouling. The research is multidisciplinary, and many projects include collaborations with national and international scientists in medicine, biochemistry, organic chemistry or marine biology.

Our research in antifouling materials includes both development of protein resistant surfaces for biomedical applications and non-toxic strategies for the prevention of marine biofouling. The activities in these areas are aiming at a molecular understanding of how proteins, cells or marine organisms interact with surfaces, and how adsorption or colonization depend on the physico-chemical properties of the surfaces. Careful studies of the used materials with advanced characterization methods are of central importance for this activity.

Duties
As a PhD student, you will participate in a project on structural characterization of antifouling polymers, aiming at understanding how antifouling properties are related to the molecular structure of the polymers. This project includes preparation of polymeric coatings, physico-chemical investigations of these, and studies of protein resistance, bioadhesion or marine fouling onto these coatings (the weight of the different project components can be adjusted depending on the background of the applicant). Antifouling polymers are typically strongly hydrophilic and swell in water. However, the swollen structure, and thus also the antifouling performance, depends on several synthesis parameters, as well as environmental parameters such as pH, salinity and temperature. Structural characterization of the polymers is of central importance to the project, and will be carried out using different methods, but in particular, neutron reflectivity will be important, which will require regular short visits to different European neutron research facilities.

As a PhD student you will primarily work on your research project, but you are permitted to work with education and administration up to a maximum of 20 percent of full time.

Requirements
We are seeking students with a degree at the Master's level (or equivalent) in physics, physical chemistry, materials science, polymer science, engineering biology or other relevant backgrounds.

Appointment time
The first appointment is for one year, with annual renewal. The total time of appointment must not exceed the equivalent of four years full time research training. In case of part-time research training, the total time of appointment must not exceed eight years.

Starting date
Immediately, or by agreement

Salary
The salary for PhD students is based on the department's salary scale.
