We are looking for two highly motivated Doctoral students to join our team at the Department of Life Sciences, Chalmers University of Technology. If you have a critical analytical thinking and a strong interest in deep learning applied to human health, this position may be the right one for you.
About us
The position is based in the Division of Systems and Synthetic Biology, which belongs to the Department of Life Sciences at Chalmers University of Technology.
The Department of Life Sciences conducts research, innovation, and education to enable a biobased society and improve human health. We explore how biological systems, and innovative technologies can be used to convert biomass into valuable products. We use advanced computational technologies to discover how biomolecules and organisms function and interact. We pioneer new methods for prediction, prevention, diagnostics and treatment of diseases.
At the Division of Systems and Synthetic Biology biologists, chemists, mathematicians, and engineers work together with the goal of understanding and quantitatively describing the complex functioning of living organisms. We develop technologies that contribute to human health and biosustainability.
About the research project
The Doctoral students will join the Marie Curie Training Network Bug-ID, which focuses on rapid diagnostics in sepsis using biosensors. The projects in the Polsterlab will center on detecting biosignatures in blood with the help of advanced deep learning methods. A special focus will be placed on Biologically Constrained Variational Autoencoders. The work will also include interpreting biosensor readouts to support and refine sepsis diagnostics.
Who we are looking for
The following requirements are mandatory:
• To qualify as a Doctoral student, you must have a Master's degree (masterexamen) of 120 credits or a Master's degree (magisterexamen) of 60 credits* in Data Science, Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Machine Learning or related fields.
• You need excellent programming skills and an ability to design and implement machine learning-based projects.
• You need a strong motivation to pursue independent research, be curious to acquire new skills and knowledge and collaborate in a fast-paced environment.
• You will need strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
• for students with an education earned outside of Sweden, a 4-year Bachelor's degree is accepted.
What you will do
• Take courses at an advanced level within the Graduate school of Life Sciences
• Drive your research project forward, and with growing independence, show initiative and proactively contribute with your own research ideas
• Design and conduct your own projects, including development of a detailed project plan with clear milestones and goals
• Author scientific publications as well as present your findings at international conferences
• The position generally also includes teaching on Chalmers' undergraduate level or performing other duties corresponding to 20 percent of working hours

Contract terms
• The Doctoral student positions are fully funded from start.
• The position is a fixed-term appointment of four years, with the possibility to teach up to 20%, which extends the position up to five years.
• A starting salary of 34,550 SEK per month (valid from May 25, 2025).
• Doctoral studies require physical presence throughout the entire study period. A valid residence permit must be presented by the study start date; otherwise the admission may be withdrawn.
