Rooted in a scientific analysis of risk, the Foundation brings together the brightest minds from academia, politics, business and civil society to forge transformative approaches to secure a better future for all.
The Foundation was founded in 2012 by the Swedish investor and author Laszlo Szombatfalvy. Having fled to Sweden in 1956 from unrest in Hungary, he took interest in the stock market and the analysis of financial risk. His analytic abilities proved highly successful and after a lifelong career as an investor he applied his scientific approach to risk on the greatest challenges facing humanity. Concluding that these are gravely underestimated by political and business leaders, Szombatfalvy decided to put a major portion of his accumulated wealth into the Global Challenges Foundation.
The Foundation's work is based on the belief that today's global challenges such as climate change, conflict and extreme poverty are the product of an increasingly interdependent world. They transcend national borders, potentially affecting large swathes of the world's population. The Foundation acts as a convening platform to bring together leading thinkers from diverse disciplines to discuss how these risks might be better managed by the world community.
JOB DESCRIPTION
Effectively acting in the world requires being observant and responsive. As Communications Officer one of your main responsibilities is to keep track of everything going on in the world relevant to the Foundation and the areas we operate within, to make sure we are always informed and can act on that information. Conversely, you are aware of how the work of the Foundation is received by others, what the global consequences of our projects are, who is talking about them and why. You are attentive to the entire media landscape, current debate and discourse, especially related to global catastrophic risk and global governance.
Building such knowledge means building relations, which is why you will spend a lot of time on outreach activities and following them up. You are comfortable in communicating through correspondence and other media with a large number of actors from all over the world. You know how to identify who we should talk to and when to ideally do so, always keeping a track record for future reference, to know when strategically to activate what contacts.
You will also write and in other ways communicate clear messages signed the Foundation, based on given media strategy and guidelines. We work closely with some of the world's best PR firms to carefully craft our public presence and you will be a point of contact in that regard. Given your skills, you value a thought-through strategy and know how to follow one through both in the short and long term.
Writing advanced text in English is central to your role and what you will spend a lot of time on, previous experience from similar tasks is a huge merit, except of course that you are fully fluent in English, preferable a native speaker. Additional languages are a plus, as is anything else that might open additional doors throughout the world.
The Foundation is inspired by the belief that human ingenuity, properly channeled, can avert catastrophe and provide a better future for all. If you share that belief, you will be part of an organization that makes a true difference.
