The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 56 000 students and 6 600 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future. The Institute of Biomedicine is involved in both research and education. In both of these areas, we focus on fundamental knowledge of the living cell - what it consists of, how it works, how its function is directed by the genetic material, and how it interacts with various kinds of micro-organisms. Using this knowledge, we try to elucidate the causes of diseases, and find new ways to diagnose and treat them.

The Institute is composed of the following four departments:

• The Department of Infectious Diseases
• The Department of Microbiology and Immunology
• The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Cell Biology
• The Department of Laboratory Medicine

At present, the institute has about 340 employees and approximately 450 million SEK in total asset.

Our lab, located at Clinical Chemistry at Sahlgrenska Hospital, works with the myocardial infarction marker cardiac troponin, which is released from the heart when a person has a myocardial infarction. Unfortunately, the methods that measure cardiac troponin have problems with interference, the measurement method gives a falsely high level. In these cases, the clinician must investigate the patient for suspected myocardial infarction while inpatient, which causes unnecessary concern for the patient and the doctor, increased healthcare costs and the risk of healthcare injuries when performing coronary X-rays and heart biopsies during the investigation. During the 5 years that we have been an investigative lab for suspected cardiac troponin interference, we have developed several methods that can reliably determine whether an increased troponin level is false or not. Unfortunately, the methods are slow, taking over a day to perform. This means that the clinician does not receive an answer until the patient is hospitalized and an investigation including coronary X-rays has already been performed.

We want to refine and streamline the methods so that the clinician can receive an answer within an hour, 24 hours a day. The methods must also be accepted by routine personnel so that they can be performed even at night when the labs are often sparsely staffed.

Duties
Develop rapid methods to exclude analytical interference. Work in a research lab with a focus on method development and troubleshooting. Participate in research projects and contribute to experimental strategies as well as writing manuscripts.

Qualifications
You must have documented experience working in a hospital central lab, know the Abbott Alinity system, be a licensed biomedical analyst, and have documented experience working in a research lab with everything that involves experimental strategy, working independently with method development and troubleshooting, be able to write manuscripts, be able to read scientific literature, etc. We also want employees who have documented prior knowledge in cardiac biomarkers, specifically the biology of cardiac troponin.

Employment
The employment is full time and temporary, 11 months with placement at the Institute of Biomedicine. First day of employment as agreed.
