The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 56 000 students and 6 600 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.Associate Researcher in fish physiology with expertise in immunology

At the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences (BioEnv) we have teaching and research activities that stretch from the alpine ecosystem, through forests, cultivated land and streams, all the way into the marine environment. In these environments we study different levels of biological organisation from genes, individuals and populations to communities and ecosystems. We work within ecology, evolution, physiology, systematics, and combinations of these fields in order to understand the impact of natural and anthropogenic changes of the environment.

The department is placed at two different localities: in the building Natrium located on Medicinareberget in Gothenburg and Kristineberg Center in Fiskebäckskil. The current position is placed at Natrium, Medicinareberget.

The aim of the project is to improve production efficiency and environmental performance of salmonid fish in aquaculture, while maintaining fish health and welfare through improved vaccination strategies. The scientific objective of this project investigating vaccination effects on whole animal physiology, and this position is focused on the immune system, in particular in mucosal tissue, and stress-related physiological functions. The work involves practical, laboratory and theoretical tasks.

Duties

• To analyze and compile gene expression data and results from already conducted in vivo experiments on the effects of vaccination in fish. The work task is focused on processing of next generation sequencing data and bioinformatics.
• Writing of scientific manuscripts. Other types of dissemination may be included.
• Take part of routine work of the research group, including animal care taking, analyses, and sampling.

Required qualifications for the employment:
Documented theoretical and practical competence in fish immunology, particularly mucosal defense mechanisms and interaction with stress physiology, with specialization in molecular biology and processing of large sequencing data sets. Experience from working at the whole animal level with fish, including sampling. Experimental design and statistical analytical skills.

Desirable qualifications for the employment:
As part of a research team, the person should be cooperative and enjoy working together with others, as well as being able to work independently taking own responsibility for running the work tasks.
