Information about the research/the department
The position is placed at the division of Material and Computational Mechanics, within the Department of Industrial and Materials Science. The research of the division is focused on the mechanics of structures, components and manufacturing processes, with special emphasis on the involved material behavior. Currently, six senior researchers, two postdocs and about 15 PhD students are working within our active research fields: Lightweight materials and structures, Multiphase and metallic materials, Process modeling and simulation, Railway mechanics, and Structural mechanics. In this development, mechanics-based solutions and virtual solution tools to our engineering challenges are provided. The division also has extensive teaching activities in bachelor and master programs at Chalmers.
Major responsibilities
You will play an important role in contributing to our research and education activities. Your main tasks include formulating and executing research projects, attracting research funding, and supporting post-doctoral researchers and doctoral students. You are also expected to be active in the dissemination of research results to distinguished journals and conferences. Teaching duties include course responsibility, development, course administration and supervision of students at bachelor and master levels. The range of courses, in which you are expected to engage, spans from basic courses in solid mechanics to advanced courses in computational methods for mechanical analysis of materials and structures.
Contract terms
The appointment as Assistant Professor is a four-year, entry-level, faculty position with tenure track, whereby you will acquire both pedagogical and research qualifications. An Assistant Professor is expected to improve the ability to formulate and solve scientific
problems, to publish scientific articles, and to develop the skills in teaching and supervision, by means of both practical training and independent studies. The aim is to achieve the level of Associate Professor within four years. If successful, you will be offered a permanent faculty position at Chalmers.
Qualifications
To qualify for the position, you have a doctoral degree in a relevant field not older than 7 years prior to the application deadline. Exceptions can be made for longer periods resulting from parental leave, sick leave or military service*.
As assistant professor you are expected to take part in the development of the division's active research fields in the next phase of growth and development. Thereby, your scientific excellence, innovative capabilities, awareness of current state of the art, and entrepreneurial achievements are all evaluated highly. On the teaching side, you are expected to be able to take full responsibility for bachelor and master-level courses in solid mechanics and the finite element method.
For a full decription of the qualification requirements for an Assistant professor position at Chalmers, please consult our Appointment regulations, Chapter 6.4.
The successful candidate must have the full range of qualifications, experience, and abilities including:
• A doctoral degree in solid and/or structural mechanics or a related field.
• A proven track record and/or high potential for high quality research as evidenced by your publication records. Your scientific expertise, scientific independence and novel ideas shall be demonstrated through your previous research as well as in your application to the position.
• Capability to be creative in, and to further develop, the active research fields of the division, thereby further strengthening our scientific position.
• Documented experience from high-quality teaching and facilitated learning in higher education that has been well-received by students.
Previous experience in course development and course administration is a strong merit.
The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. If Swedish is not your native language, Chalmers offers Swedish courses. Knowledge of, or an interest in learning Swedish is meritorious.
• The date shown in your doctoral degree certificate is the date we use, as this is the date you have met all requirements for the doctoral degree.
