The Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics (MEB) is among the largest departments of epidemiology in Europe with special focus on increasing our knowledge of the aetiology of different diseases. Our department consists of researchers, doctoral students, biostatisticians, data collectors and database administrators as well as administrative personnel, in total some 250 staff. The department is situated at campus Solna. Further information can be found at ki.se/meb

Division

The position is in the research group of Paul Lambert (Professor of Biostatistics) and Paul Dickman (Professor of Biostatistics) within the MEB biostatistics group.

The MEB biostatistics group comprises around 45 people, including 4 professors, 3 senior lecturers, postdocs, applied biostatisticians and PhD students. The primary activities of the biostatistics group include (i) research in population-based studies, and in genetic and molecular epidemiology, (ii) collaboration with medical researchers particularly in molecular epidemiology, and (iii) biostatistics teaching both at undergraduate and graduate levels.

Duties

The research area consists of development and application of statistical methods in population-based cancer studies. There will be particular focus on using and further developing flexible parametric survival models in these studies. The successful applicant is expected to conduct independent research in the field, but also to take part in collaborative projects. Writing applications for independent funding is a part of the work description.

The research will include using national cancer registry and cancer quality registers as a basis to answer key clinical research questions and also to motivate methodological development. Of particular interest is to develop methods that make the most use of the more detailed data in the clinical quality registers together with further linked data. This was include using and developing methods that can communicate the results of complex analyses in simple ways to different audiences. Methods to compare cancer survival between different countries will also be part of the research. This will include understanding the role that data quality issues can impact on any observed differences.

Entry requirements

A person is eligible to be appointed if he or she has been awarded a PhD or has achieved the corresponding scientific competence no more than seven years before the end of the application period. Applicants must have completed their degree no more than seven years before the last date for applications. Applicants who have completed their degree earlier than this should receive equal priority if special grounds exist. The applicant should not be employed as an assistant professor or hold a permanent academic employment at the time of application.

Qualifications

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with an undergraduate degree in statistics, mathematical statistics, or a related discipline and a PhD (or a foreign qualification equivalent to a doctorate) with a focus on statistical methods in large-scale epidemiological studies. Experience of the use of cancer registry data would be an advantage. The applicant should have experience of the design and analysis of such studies and also have an understanding of issues around data quality. Experience of relative survival methods and flexible parametric models would be particularly advantageous.

The successful candidate should have good organization skills and be able to work both independently and as a member of the research group and with collaborators both nationally and internationally. Good communication- and social skills are required for these networking aspects.

Good ability to read, write and speak English is a requirement and the candidate is aided by being able to communicate well also in Swedish.

Co-supervision as well as recruitment and independent supervision of PhD-students may be a part of the development of the group, and education/training-courses in research supervision is therefore an advantage.

Bases of assessment We stress scientific expertise as well as communication- and social skills when assessing applicants.

Application process
An application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish: Curriculum vitae, qualifications and description of planned research, presented in accordance with Karolinska Institutet's qualifications portfolio ( http://ki.se/qualificationsportfolio).

The application is to be submitted through the MyNetwork recruitment system.

An Assistant professor position is a fixed-term position. The first employment should be two years, with a possible extension of two years after evaluation.
