We seek a motivated and energetic researcher who wants to join Chalmers and accelerate our quest for new knowledge and sustainability.
At Chalmers, our inspiring, world class research environments tackle important scientific and societal challenges. This position is connected to the Chalmers Area of Advance Health Engineering, where Chalmers aims to take a leading role in Sweden as well as internationally. More specifically, the position is located in the Biomedical Signals and Systems unit at the Department of Electrical Engineering and is focusing on Remote and Prehospital Digital Health. The unit offers a diverse and friendly environment with challenging and engaging research in Digital Health.
Information about the research group
The Biomedical Signals and Systems unit includes research on bone conduction hearing, neural engineering and digital health. We are doing research on hearing implants, diagnosis of vestibular disorders, muscle coordination and properties of the nerves controlling muscle activation. Within the Digital Health area, we are using data fusion, artificial intelligence (AI), telemedicine and innovative user interaction, and some examples of projects are automatic fall detection in the home, and AI-based decision support systems in acute trauma and acute stroke care.
Our aim is to support the on-going transition of delivering healthcare with more care provided outside hospitals. Our research is strongly clinically oriented with the patient and the caregiver/healthcare personnel in focus, aiming at improving medical outcome for major public health problems, such as stroke, trauma, sepsis and cardiovascular disease, as well as addressing health related areas within automotive and military healthcare.
Major responsibilities
In this role, you will develop an independent line of research within the Digital Health research area. A responsibility is to strengthen our existing multidisciplinary triple-helix collaborations and to establish new partnerships and sustainable collaborations. You will take a leading role in dissemination of research results to distinguished journals and conferences, and in acquiring funding via external research grants to develop your research team.
You will supervise PhD students and postdoctoral researchers. Other important duties include teaching, mainly in the new Biomedical Engineering programme, and supervision and examination of master's and bachelor thesis students. Your time will be divided into research (typically 80%) and teaching (20%) duties.
Your profile
You are a highly motivated researcher with a doctoral degree in Digital Health/Biomedical Engineering or other relevant field. You aim for scientific independence, but at the same time likes to collaborate with, support and teach undergraduate students, PhD students, and fellow colleagues.
To qualify for an assistant professor position, you have a doctoral degree in a relevant field not older than 7 years prior to the application deadline. Exceptions can be made for longer periods resulting from parental leave or military service.
We would like you to have at least 1 year of post-doctoral experience in academia or industry after receiving your PhD. You should have experience in formulating research ideas and contributing to developing successful proposals for research and innovation projects.
You are capable of leading research as well as developing a sustainable research team. You have already established a track-record within Digital Health, and more importantly, have an ambition to become an internationally recognized research leader. You have experience of collaborative triple-helix research projects with the medical and caring science communities and practices, and with industrial partners. Experience of traditional biomedical engineering, such as vital signs monitoring and data analysis, is meritorious, as is experience from automotive and/or home monitoring.
We would like you to have a demonstrated commitment to teach undergraduate and graduate students. You have the ability to network and connect with different stakeholders, both nationally and internationally.
The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. If Swedish is not your native language, Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
Contract terms
The positions are aimed for Assistant professor or Associate professor level. Associate professor at Chalmers is a permanent faculty position. The appointment as Assistant professor is a four-year, entry-level, faculty position with tenure track, whereby you will acquire both pedagogical and research qualifications. An Assistant professor is expected to improve their ability to formulate and solve scientific problems, to publish scientific articles, and to develop their skills in teaching and supervision, by means of both practical training and independent study. The aim is to achieve the level of Associate professor within four years and, if successful, you will be offered a permanent faculty position at Chalmers. As starting package, you will get additional funding for 2.5 years of a PhD student.
The level of the position will be decided based on the qualifications of the selected candidate. For a definition of the academic level and qualifications for the two positions, please consult our Rules of Procedure - Chalmers University of Technology's Appointment Regulations for Teaching and Research Faculty (Assistant professor chapter 6.4 and Associate professor at chapter 6.3). Your qualifications and academic level will be evaluated by the department, Chalmers Faculty Appointment Committee and external evaluators.
