At AstraZeneca we turn ideas into life changing medicines. Working here means being entrepreneurial, thinking big and working together to make the impossible a reality.
We are looking for a Translational PK/PD Scientist to join our global DMPK, Modelling & Simulation Section, (RIA IMED) in Gothenburg, Sweden.
DMPK is accountable for delivering integrated drug dispositions, biotransformation and pharmacokinetics input to projects from target selection through to lifecycle management as well as for pre-clinical translational PK/PD with the aim of predicting a safe and efficacious dose in human.
As Translational PKPD Scientist you will be providing project teams with directions for applying computational biology and mathematical modelling approaches to predict drug efficacy in human populations. This will be done by evaluation of pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PKPD) relationships in the context of respiratory disease through integration of biological data from various sources.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
* The overall responsibility is to develop and execute translational PKPD strategies in drug projects from the point of target selection up to Phase 2 clinical trials. This means setting up mechanistic PKPD models that accommodate, to an appropriate level, established knowledge and working hypothesis of the target and disease biology. These will be progressively developed and refined to include definitions of the extent of drug target engagement that is anticipated to be required to see efficacy in Phase 2 trials, hence underpinning the human dose prediction. In achieving this goal you are likely to encounter and develop the following elements.
* Collaborate with drug project biologists to articulate the drug project hypothesis by means of constructing a mathematical model. Use this model to evaluate hypothesis around target/disease biology with particular focus on defining quantitative relationships between drug exposure, target engagement and downstream biomarker changes.
* Leverage and integrate public and proprietary clinical and non-clinical data from a various sources including clinical bioinformatic data analysis, ex vivo studies with human /patient material and non-clinical in vivo studies.
* Make predictions of therapeutic dosing regimens in human by suggesting the anticipated human dose, dosing interval or timing in relation to disease progression or key events.
* Conduct bespoke PK data analysis including prediction of drug-drug interactions and whole body physiologically based PK (PBPK) modelling.
* Prepare presentations related to the above for internal governance bodies.
* Drive an area of publishable research that is relevant to drug development of respiratory disease and disseminate scientific achievements thorough conference attendance and preparation of manuscripts for research papers.
Essential Requirements
* Ph.D. or equivalent in Engineering, Mathematics, Bioinformatics, Pharmacometrics, Systems Biology/Pharmacology or a related field, preferably with pharmaceutical industry experience.
* Proven track record of successful work at the intersections of bioinformatics, clinical science and PKPD to answer questions relating to understanding disease mechanisms and prediction of drug efficacy in responding patient populations.
* Expert in general programming and data analysis tools/languages such as R, Matlab etc.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
* Strong influencing, networking and team working skills.
