This thesis work will be carried out within the Fuel System department, which is a part of VCC 's Research and Development organization.
The department consists of 70 employees, all dedicated to develop a competitive solution for future cars in a stimulating working atmosphere. The fuel system department is responsible for fuel storage, refueling, fuel level indication and delivering fuel to the engine. The department also develops systems driven by legal requirements such as the EVAP and leakage diagnostic systems for hydrocarbon emission control.
Description and Scope
The purpose of this thesis work is to develop a simulation method to investigate the fuel leakage through a ventilation valve during various driving conditions.
A fuel tank must be vented during refueling as well as when the car is parked and exposed to large heat transfer, which cause volume expansion of fuel. This ventilation is necessary to avoid pressure peaks inside the tank. The Fuel Limit Venting Valve (FLVV) is used for ventilation. The valve is in its open position until the fuel level reaches the floater inside the valve and thereby closes the venting valve.
In real driving conditions, when a vehicle with a partially filled fuel tank undergoes sudden acceleration, braking, turning or pitching motion, fuel sloshing takes place. Interaction between fuel slosh and FLVV might lead to occasions where fuel enters the venting duct. This fuel leakage from tank to FLVV duct is called Liquid Carry Over (LCO), and must be avoided as it can cause problems for other components and leads to fuel emission. Fuel emissions from cars are subject to strict legal requirements to avoid fuel smell and health related issues with hydrocarbons, which put a limit on the amount of allowed LCO.
Detailed description of thesis work:
* The goal of the master thesis is to develop a simulation method to investigate the fuel leakage through the FLVV duct during a typical driving cycle.
* Simulation of sloshing in a fuel tank and investigate different solutions to avoid LCO with help of StarCCM+ software.
* The thesis work also includes experimental investigation of fuel sloshing and measuring of LCO during a typical vehicle driving cycle. The experimental data will be used to evaluate the simulation results.
Profile
* B.Sc and M.Sc. with knowledge in the area of Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or Physics.
* Experience in using Star-CCM+ or Fluent is highly valued.
* Experience in performing experimental test is considered as valuable.
Duration
* Period: 1 semester, 30 ECTS points
* Starting date: January 2018
* Number of students: Suitable for 1-2 student.
Application
* Attach your resume and cover letter stating your interests within the given area and your thoughts and credentials.
* Please note that applications arriving later then the last application date will not be taken in consideration.
* Selection will be ongoing during the application period.
