Southern Swedish Forest Research Centre
A position as senior lecturer in silviculture with special emphasis on seedling establishment and management of young forests is open at the Faculty of Forest Sciences located at the Southern Swedish Forest Research Centre.
SLU is one of the world's highest ranked universities in several subject areas and is ranked #1 in forestry (CWUR). At our centre we carry out research, teaching and dissemination of scientific findings with direct application to the sustainable management of forests. We are a multidisciplinary institution, with global relevance but specialized expertise on issues related to the dynamic forest landscapes of southern Sweden. We closely collaborate with multiple stakeholders and conduct applied research in silviculture, forest ecology, pathology, policy and planning. We teach bachelor, Masters and PhD level courses addressing all of these subject areas.
Subject area
The subject area is silviculture with special emphasis on seedling establishment and management of young forests.
Establishment of seedlings after active regeneration and management of young forest stands are important in order to reach goals set by forest owners. It is at the phase of regeneration and management of young forests that the arena for the rest of the rotation is set. Choice of regeneration methods and pre-commercial thinning programs have large influence on production of merchantable stem volume but also affect biodiversity and many other eco-system services. Therefore, Southern Swedish Forest Research Centre is looking for a senior lecturer in silviculture with special emphasis on regeneration and management of young forests. We are looking for a candidate with operational knowledge in seedling establishment and management of young forests that are able to both conduct advanced research and efficiently disseminate results to stakeholders.
Duties
The senior lecturer is expected to develop research and teaching within the subject area and communicate with stakeholders. The senior lecturer shall define and develop its own research agenda in cooperation with research-groups at the department and at other departments as well as governmental offices and other stakeholders in the forest sector. The senior lecturer shall actively apply for research funding. Dissemination of research and research results to society is an important part of the job. The senior lecturer shall teach at advanced level within the subject area, be actively involved in development of courses at the department and act as supervisor for master- and PhD-students.
Qualifications
The applicant shall:
• have obtained the degree of PhD in Forestry or nearby subject,
• have experience (post-doc or higher employment) from an academic environment outside SLU or an PhD-exam from another university,
• have proven scientific skills within the subject area of the position,
• have demonstrated pedagogical skill and have undergone around 10 weeks of training in teaching methods or otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in order to lead and develop teaching within the subject area on basic-, advanced- and PhD-level,
• have good knowledge in the English language
Assessment criteria
Assessment for the appointment will be based on the degree to which the candidate possesses the skills to qualify for the position. Attained associate professor (docent) or corresponding title is a merit.
When evaluating pedagogical skills the following is considered:
• experience of planning, performing and evaluating teaching
• experience in supervising and examination at PhD-level
• ability to integrate research and a scientific approach in teaching
When evaluating the scientific skills the following is considered:
• Quantity and quality of conducted and ongoing research
• Ability to initiate and conduct innovative research in the subject area independently and as part of groups
• Experience of applying and obtaining external research funding
Other skills that are considered:
• Ability to develop and lead activities and staff at the University
• Communication and cooperation
• Extension with society
• Information of research and development
Knowledge in the Swedish language is a merit
