The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 56 000 students and 6 600 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.Sukanya Raghavan's group at the University of Gothenburg conducts research in immunotherapy for lung cancer, with a particular focus on identifying biomarkers for clinical response in patients undergoing treatment with PD-1 inhibitors. PD-1 inhibitors work by blocking a specific protein (PD-1) on CD8+ T cells, allowing for more effective tumor combat. Despite the successes of this type of treatment, many patients do not respond, and the mechanisms behind this non-response are still being investigated.

By using advanced methods such as flow cytometry and next-generation sequencing, her group hopes to identify biomarkers that can predict the treatment's effectiveness or signs of tumor progression early in the treatment process. The aim is also to develop alternative therapies for patients who do not respond to PD-1 blockade, making the research highly relevant for clinical applications in close collaboration with Sahlgrenska University Hospital.
