At the Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology, at the Sahlgrenska Academy, we conduct research and education covering a wide range of knowledge areas. The institute comprises five different departments: Clinical Neuroscience, Health and Rehabilitation, Pharmacology, Physiology and Psychiatry and Neurochemistry.
The Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology, invites applications for a research position in the Metabolic Physiology laboratory of Karolina Skibicka, at the Department of Physiology.
Job assignments
Metabolic physiology is a synopsis of the processes that control our metabolism and the body's endocrine functions. The position is focused on neuronal control and molecular basis of appetite regulation, in particular the brain mechanisms that regulate feeding behaviour and how these mechanisms contribute to vulnerability to obesity, to food reinforcement, and to impulsivity related to appetite decisions. Work with neuroanatomy, preparation of rodent brains, microdissection for genetic analyses, confocal microscopy, stereotaxic and vagal (precise nodose ganglia) surgery, in vivo optogenetics and metabolic characterization. Utilization of genetic vectors in in vitro and in vivo settings. Work with genetic vectors and pharmacological techniques in combination with stereotaxic surgery in rats. Performing fundamental molecular techniques including PCR will be required.
Qualifications
The candidate should have a PhD in medical science, with specialty in feeding physiology. Theoretical background in feeding, metabolism, and assessments of rodent behaviour is considered as a plus. Proven ability to work independently with the operant conditioning system for rats will be very important. Experience working the vagus nerve, including precise vagal, nodose ganglia injection of SAP and AAV will be very important. It will be critical that the candidate has a proven ability to work with all the above-named methods independently without hands on supervision. Thus, sufficient prior experience with all necessary experimental methodology is necessary. Good communication skills, excellent scientific English (oral and written) is required. We are looking for a highly motivated and ambitious researcher and great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability.
Employment
The employment is limited (temporary) for 12 months, 100% of full-time and is placed at the Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology. Starting date; as soon as possible or as agreed.
