The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 38 000 students and 6 000 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

The Institute of Biomedicine is involved in both research and education. In both of these areas, we focus on fundamental knowledge of the living cell - what it consists of, how it works, how its function is directed by the genetic material, and how it interacts with various kinds of micro-organisms. Using this knowledge, we try to elucidate the causes of diseases, and find new ways to diagnose and treat them. At present, the institute has about 360 employees and approximately 400 million SEK in total assets.

The Institute is composed of the following five departments: the Department of Infectious Diseases, the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, the Department of Pathology and Genetics, the Department of Clinical Chemistry and Transfusion Medicine and the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Cell Biology.

A research group in molecular neuroinflammation and neuroprotection at the dept of medical chemistry and cellbiology announces a research position in neuroinflammation and neuroprotection research mainly studying mechanisms behind the regulation of the inducible anti-oxidant system in the developing nervous system and metabolism in microglia. A main aim is to characterize the role of sirtuins in the molecular mechanisms behind the metabolic shift from oxidative phosphorylation to aerobic glycolysis that occurs when microglia are activated via Toll Like Receptors. The experimental models will mainly be cell cultures but inflammation in combination with hypoxia-ischemia in vivo could also be used.

Job assignments

Research focusing on effects of neuroinflammation, especially molecular mechanisms behind up- and down-regulation of the inducible anti-oxidant system, sirtuins and the role of neuropeptides/peptidases. Positions may include some teaching obligations, mostly in form of supervising PhD students and undergraduate students.

Qualifications

Applicants must have completed PhD in Biochemistry, Medical Science, Biotechnology or Biomedicine. The ideal candidate has a PhD in biochemistry and/or neuroscience, with theoretical background in neuroscience and epigenetics with experiences in q-PCR, Western blot, cell culturing and quantifying microscopic images. Good collaborative and communicative skills are necessary.

Employment

The employment is limited (temporary) for 7 months and full-time with placement at the Institute of biomedicine. First day of employment as agreed.
