SMT R&I (Research & Innovation) main task is to develop new materials in the area advanced stainless steels, nickel base alloys and special alloys. The material evolution involves competences such as metallurgy, corrosion, mechanical properties, welding, modelling and sustainability. The Physical Metallurgy unit consists of experienced engineers with different backgrounds and is a service function with responsibility for advanced internal testing and investigations throughout SMT. Currently we are looking for a creative Research Engineer working with electron microscopy for an exciting role where you will work with cutting edge research in close collaboration with development projects as well as production. Job Summary
As Research Engineer, you have instrument and method responsibility for electron probe micro analysis (EPMA) as well as measurement of physical properties. You will also act as a resource in transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Within those fields, you continuously develop measurement methods and perform investigations in order to help SMT develop new materials and products. You keep up-to-date with recent developments by participating in relevant forums and interacting with research groups within the field, as well as identifying suitable characterization techniques and participating in materials development projects. You leverage subject knowledge and expertise in your own work and in interaction with other parts of the organization while continually developing the same. You also generate and develop new ideas and apply them in accordance with SMT's requirements.
We are looking for someone with a technical degree with a relevant focus, preferably within metallurgy, technical physics or materials knowledge. To be suited for this role you need to have good skills within electron microscopy, and a PhD and/or research experience related to electron microprobes are advantageous. As we are based in Sweden but act in the international arena, your communication skills in Swedish and English are great, both verbally and in writing.
