Position description
The School of Business, Society and Engineering is looking for a research engineer in energy and environmental engineering. The position involves working within the research specialization Future Energy Center (FEC). The work is part of the research activities conducted for the installation of near infrared spectroscopy sensors in an industrial environment under the DYNOP project at FEC.
The DYNOP project focuses on the development of an integrated control system which will combine the measurement of the quality of the biomass brought into the conversion process, and multivariable control using a process model. An efficient diagnostics system will also reduce maintenance cost and time. If the models can be adapted in a controlled way and combine different Artificial Intelligence functions and process optimization adjustment for different conditions, this will result in significant benefits, such as the reduction of waste of chemicals, energy, and raw material due to poor control. This can also lead to the achievement of better treatment results, which will limit pollutant emissions to the environment.
The objective of the work is the online installation of near infrared spectroscopy sensors (FT-NIR, DA-NIR, Hypespectral Imaging camera) at the biomass-fired power plant at Eskilstuna Energi och Miljö (ESEM). The work will combine experimental tests on site and in the lab with the instruments to develop models for woodchip properties that can be used to improve the real-time control of the process. A large part of the work will be done at - or in close contact with - partner organizations, especially ESEM and Bestwood. The successful candidate is therefore expected to have a good engineering background with profound skills in experimental measurements and be able to interact effectively with partner research institutes, industry, colleagues and other stakeholders. As the project interacts closely with other researchers and industrial partners, the applicant needs to have high collaborative skills.
The position is a temporary employment of 6-12 months at 50%-100% scope.

The applicant is required to have a MSc degree in Mechanical Engineering, Energy Engineering, or Chemical Engineering. A PhD degree in the above fields or equivalent research experience is considered highly meritorious. The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. Knowledge of Swedish is a significant advantage.
Further qualifications and merits

Further merits for the position are:
• Experience in experimental measurements
• Experience in installations in industrial environments
• Experience with near infrared spectroscopy
• Knowledge of, experience with, and/or interest in programming languages and modeling and analysis tools such as C++, Python, and/or Matlab.
• Ability to collaborate with other researchers as well as work independently.
• Curious, goal-oriented, flexible, ambitious, and communicative personality.
• Interest in developing methods and bringing them into different application areas.
