Background
We are currently looking for a Research Engineer to participate in the research activities involving the development of methods for the pretreatment and fractionation of various resources including wood biomass (e.g. birch, spruce, beech) and aquatic biomass (e.g. tunica) based on the organosolv process.
The Biochemical Process Engineering group is in charge of a multipurpose laboratory with key competences for biobased products and processes covering biomass pretreatment, fractionation, fermentation, bioconversion, green chemistry, up-stream and down-stream processing. The research subject is a part of the Department of Civil, Environmental and Natural Resources Engineering with ca. 350 employees:
http://www.ltu.se/org/sbn?l=enThe Biochemical Process Engineering subject (
https://www.ltu.se/research/subjects/Biochemical-Process-Engineering?l=en) is developing integrated processes that combine biotechnology and chemistry to produce foods, chemicals, medicines and fuels. A particular focus is on using bio-based raw materials (such as forest residues) as raw materials and to develop processes for biorefineries. The subject now consists of 10 senior researchers and several PhD and undergraduate students.
Worktasks
In this project, the selected candidate will work on the development of methods for the pretreatment and fractionation of various renewable resources, including woodchips, sawdust, bark and tunica. To do this, the candidate will work with the organosolv reactors belonging to the Biochemical Process Engineering group, perform pretreatments at different operational conditions, isolate the biomass fractions (i.e. cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin), characterize these fractions and perform mass balances.
The position includes a fixed-term employment for 4 months (March-June 2019) and it will be 60% of full time.
Qualifications
To be qualified for this position the applicant must have a B.Sc. or M.Sc. in Biotechnology or Chemical Engineering. Due to the limited amount of time for this position, previous laboratory experience and participation in research project is required. Knowledge of common laboratory practices are strong merit and especially previous experience in analytical methods involving biomass characterization. Practical experience with the application of pretreatment and fractionation methods of lignocellulosic substrates is a positive characteristic.
The successful candidate for the position is a highly-motivated person with a great attitude for research, a strong intellect and disciplined work habits. You should be able to work well both independently and as a part of a team. Good observational and communication skills are essential. In addition, you should have a good level of English, both spoken and written.
