Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science
The Department of Applied Animal Science and Welfare
The Department of Applied Animal Science and Welfare aims to promote good animal management and animal welfare and to contribute to an economically, socially, and environmentally sustainable food production with high product quality. Through research, education, and collaboration, we develop knowledge about animals with a focus on feed and nutrition, management and environment, ethology and animal ethics, welfare, health, and protection. Our mission is to increase understanding of farm animals, sport and companion animals, fish, animals used in research, and reindeer, through scientifically based knowledge within our research areas.

At the department, advanced and innovative research is conducted to develop the sustainable aquaculture of the future. With active researchers in nutrition, welfare, and production, as well as in related fields, we work towards the sustainable development of aquaculture. Using a wide range of techniques and a well-established research infrastructure, we can, among other things, study future circular feed ingredients and fish welfare. Our work mainly focuses on salmonids, but also includes some tropical fish species. Our expertise is broad and multidisciplinary, with a focus on aquaculture in a Swedish and Nordic context. We offer excellent opportunities to advance research and help shape the future aquaculture.
