Neurology and neuroscience in Gothenburg are characterized by a broad scope of research activities which have been important for the implementation of new research findings into healthcare as well as led to excellent possibilities for teaching and successful recruitment of co-workers. This development is particularly important as neurological disorders, due to their often disabling nature, lead to considerable human suffering and huge costs for society. In recent years, the development of imaging techniques, together with advances in basic cell biology, genetics and molecular genetics have enriched the research environment and opened up new opportunities for further strengthening of clinical neuroscience.
Titel: Professor in Neuroimmunology
Beskrivning av arbetsuppgifter:
SPECIFIC SUBJECT DESCRIPTION During the past decade, neuroimmunology has evolved into a very strong research area. For an increasing number of neurological conditions of previously unknown etiology, immunological mechanisms have been shown to be of pathophysiological importance and the realization that dysregulated immune responses contribute to the development of neurological disease has opened up for new treatment possibilities. Neuroimmunology is a rapidly growing field that is of great importance for example for stroke and neurotrauma research as well as neurorehabilitation. Increased understanding of the role of the immune system not only in the development and function of the nervous system but also in recovery after different types of brain injury is a prerequisite for the development of novel therapeutic approaches for these conditions. JOB ASSIGNMENTS The position consists of an active and independent research at a high international level in the area of neuroimmunology, directed towards translational regenerative neuroimmunology and with focus on the role of the immune system in the normal CNS development, its functions in the healthy brain as well as functional recovery after brain injury such as stroke or traumatic brain injury. Further, the research activities shall aim at the strengthening of the collaborative interactions between basic and clinical neuroscience. The successful candidate will have an overall responsibility for research and training in regenerative neuroimmunology at the third cycle level together with responsibility for third cycle courses in neuroscience with focus on clinical applications. For these reasons, medical education is an advantage. The position consists also of teaching and student supervision: occasional lectures within different training programs at the undergraduate level and advanced level as well as supervision of research students and teaching at third cycle courses. Assignments of administrative nature are also expected. Further, the position consists of informing the public as well as the scientific community about research and development in the area.
