The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 55 900 students and 6 600 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.
At the Department of Biomedicine, we study the cells of the human body, their composition, how they work and interact and how their function is controlled by genes. With this knowledge we try to clarify the genetic and molecular perturbations leading to various pathological states. This in order to identify new ways to diagnose and treat disease. These investigative efforts are easily combined with clinical pathology. The academic field has recently expanded rapidly, not least due to the development of advanced biopsy and molecular techniques and the number of samples and sample types expand with each year. The department of pathology at the Sahlgrenska University Hospital is the largest in Scandinavia and offers a complete diagnostic service directed towards all disease fields and organ systems. This offers rich opportunities to perform research and integrated clinical activity. We wish to recruit a professor that may develop and enrich the strong traditions of the department within the field of clinical pathology and diagnostics, research, education and interactions with the surrounding society, with a focus on health care and university.
Subject area
Clinical Pathology
Subject area description
Clinical pathology is a specialty within laboratory medicine that centers on histopathological diagnosis of disease. Various types of tissue samples are foremost analyzed, such as biopsies, cytological specimen (cell preparations) and surgical resections. Another technique is the establishment of cause of death and causative diseases in patients by autopsy. The specialty also encompasses patient reception and acquisition of fine needle aspiration material followed by cytological diagnosis. The main method for pathological diagnostics is microscopical examination of tissue and cells. In addition to conventional tissue staining techniques, supportive methods such as immunofluorescence and immunohistochemistry are used. Increasingly, the diagnostics are supplemented with molecular biological techniques such as PCR, DNA- and RNA- sequencing and in-situ hybridization. These adjunct techniques encompassed by the term molecular pathology. Furthermore, the pathological image is currently undergoing digitalization. Pathology offers a broad foundation for research into diverse disease categories, with a focus on, but not limited to, tumour biology and inflammation.
