The Department of Physics at Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden invites applications for a two-year postdoctoral position in theoretical nuclear physics to begin in 2023 (starting date flexible). The position is connected to the 2024 Tage Erlander visiting professorship in Sweden, that will be hosted at Chalmers and held by Prof. Daniel Phillips from Ohio University, plus the possibility for up to one additional year extension.

Research questions that are currently studied in our group include the application of ab initio approaches based on chiral effective field theory to few- and many-nucleon systems and low-energy precision tests of physics beyond the standard model, as well as the quantification of theoretical uncertainties through development of advanced statistical methods and emulator technology. We take a leading role in the field, in particular through our development of advanced computational methods, and you can expect to contribute at the forefront of theoretical physics research. The extended visit by Prof. Phillips is expected to further strengthen our research efforts.

Organisationally we are part of the division of Subatomic, High-Energy and Plasma Physics within the Department of Physics. We strive to provide a stimulating and collaborative research environment with high scientific standards and we value our many international collaborations.

Information about the project
The postdoctoral project will focus on fundamental science questions in theoretical nuclear physics. More specifically, we will use ab initio nuclear-structure theory and a modern understanding of the nuclear interaction grounded in effective field theory to model subatomic processes with quantified theoretical uncertainties. The project will involve the development of state-of-the-art methods that involve quantum many-body theory, effective field theory, computational physics, and statistical methods. This gives an excellent opportunity for the successful candidate to both develop new theoretical skills and learn new computational techniques and statistical approaches.

Major responsibilities
Your major responsibility as a postdoctoral researcher is to carry out research aimed at a better understanding of low-energy nuclear physics. You are also expected to develop your own ideas and find your own ways of tackling research challenges. The position may include some supervision of bachelors, masters, and PhD students. It is expected that your research will be integrated within international research collaborations and that you will take an active role within these collaborations. You will therefore be expected to contribute to the continued development of our computer codes and employ them in your own research and collaborative projects. You will communicate research results at international conferences as well as in scientific journals.

Qualifications
To qualify for the position of postdoc, you must hold a doctoral degree in Physics, awarded no more than three years prior to the application deadline (according to the current agreement with the Swedish Agency for Government Employers). A strong educational background in advanced theoretical physics (quantum many-body theory, effective field theory, computational physics), good programming skills and experience with nuclear many-body solvers and statistical methods are advantageous.

As Chalmers is a highly international environment, proficiency in written and spoken English is necessary.

Contract terms
This postdoc position is a full-time temporary employment for two years, plus the possibility for up to one additional year extension.
