Electrocatalysis will play a pivotal role in the transition from our fossil fuel-based society to a more sustainable and renewable society. In this project, you will investigate novel electrocatalytic materials for applications in hydrogen fuel cells.

Information about the division and the department
The position will be located at the department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering in the Luneau Research Group. Using a multidisciplinary approach, the group focuses on designing and investigating new catalytic materials for sustainable reactions, with the overall goal to reduce carbon dioxide emissions originating from the production of energy and chemicals.

The position is funded by the Area of Advance Energy at Chalmers which covers the development of technologies and systems that support the transition towards a sustainable energy utilization in society.
Within the department and the Area of Advance, you will have the opportunity to interact with world-class researchers in a multidisciplinary environment.

Major responsibilities
Throughout the project, you will aim to design and develop highly efficient electrocatalysts for hydrogen fuel cells.

You will synthesize electrocatalytic materials with high atomic efficiency of metals, including single atom electrocatalysts. You will characterize the prepared catalysts and have access to a wide range of advanced characterization techniques available at the department and at the Chalmers Materials Analysis Laboratory (CMAL) such as XPS, SEM, TEM, XRD... You will carry out electrocatalytic tests in electrochemical cells. A very important aspect of the project will be to develop in situ/operando characterization techniques to elucidate the nature of the active site(s) during reaction. These will be primarily done at synchrotron facilities.

You will also participate in at least one scientific meeting per year to present results from your research and develop your network.

In addition to your own research and experiments, you will also supervise and help train new students when they join the group. This will help develop your skills as a mentor/supervisor. This position will help you prepare and plan your future career in industry, academia or other sectors.

Qualifications
You must have a PhD in chemistry or chemical physics or similar, with an expertise in electrocatalysis or electrochemistry.
Experience with materials synthesis and/or in situ/operando characterization is a merit.

The research project is experimental in nature and you should be motivated to work in the lab, learn new techniques and have the ability to take initiative. You should also be organized and able to work independently, as part of a collaborative research group.

Good written and oral communication skills in English are needed for the position.

To qualify for the position of postdoc, you must hold a doctoral degree awarded no more than three years prior to the application deadline (according to the current agreement with the Swedish Agency for Government Employers). Exceptions from the 3-year limit can be made for longer periods resulting from parental leave, sick leave or military service.

Contract terms
This postdoc position is a full-time temporary employment for two years.
