Umeå Centre for Microbial Research (UCMR;

Postdoctoral Position
Intracellular survival mechanisms of Francisella tularensis
Francisella tularensis is a highly virulent bacterium and the etiologic agent of tularemia. The disease occurs in a wide variety of mammals. The bacterium is transmitted to humans by various means, including bites from infected vectors and inhalation of infectious aerosols. The disease is rather common in the Nordic countries.
While many of the molecular mechanisms of Francisella infections are largely unresolved, it has been established that the ability to survive and multiply in macrophages is essential for its virulence. The project will elucidate virulence factors of F. tularensis that allow multiplication in macrophages and also identification of factors that are unique to the highly virulent subspecies tularensis. Specifically, we have previously identified that strains of the subspecies are highly resistant to reactive oxygen species and the project will address the molecular mechanisms responsible for this ability. Most of the relevant methods are already established. We are looking for a highly motivated applicant with a PhD in microbiology and with expertise in molecular biology. Prior experience in working with cell infection models, animal models or bacterial gene regulation is a plus.
