Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.
The Institute of Biomedicine is involved in both research and education. In both of these The Institute of Biomedicine is involved in both research and education. In both of these areas, we focus on fundamental knowledge of the living cell - what it consists of, how it works, how its function is directed by the genetic material, and how it interacts with various kinds of micro-organisms. Using this knowledge, we try to elucidate the causes of diseases, and find new ways to diagnose and treat them.
The Institute is composed of the following four departments:
• The Department of Infectious Diseases
• The Department of Microbiology and Immunology
• The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Cell Biology
• The Department of Laboratory Medicine
At present, the institute has about 360 employees and approximately 440 million SEK in total assets.
Subject area
Long noncoding RNAs and Cancer Biology.
Subject area description
The overall aim of the project is to identify key regulatory long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) involved in tumor development and progression. Candidate molecules will be identified and characterized using a range of cell biology and molecular biology techniques, ranging from large-scale genomics to focused molecular and cell biology and biochemical studies. We therefore aim to recruit a postdoc with complementary scientific skills.
Job assignments
Candidate will work on regulatory long noncoding RNAs that have been shortlisted using genome scale functional long noncoding RNA screens. Projects in the lab involve; 1) Characterization of mechanisms by which long noncoding RNA in the regulation of mitosis phase of the cell cycle, in particular chromosome segregation. 2) Exploring the functional role of long noncoding RNAs in cell differentiation programs and 3) Uncovering long noncoding RNA functions in tumor development and progression using selected cancer model systems. The selected candidate will work with primary tumors, tumor cell lines and mouse xenografts.
Eligibility
An achieved doctoral degree is compulsory for a position as postdoctor at Göteborg University. The doctoral thesis shall be in a relevant area according to the specific position stated here. Since a position as postdoctor aims to give new holders of the doctorate the opportunity mainly to strengthen and develop their scholarly proficiency, we aim for those who have a doctoral degree not older than 3 years counting from last date of application.
The qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance.
Assessment
Highly motivated candidates with a strong technical experience in RNA biology and cell & molecular biology can apply for this position. To be eligible for employment as a postdoctoral fellow, applicants must have a PhD in a relevant subject. The prospective candidate is expected to have experience with cell-based assays and good experience in molecular biology techniques. The candidates should have extensive experience RNA related technology and this expertise would help in optimizing novel technologies that can address important questions such as how lncRNAs communicate with their target protein coding genes.
Regulations for the evaluation of qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance.
Employment
The employment is full time and temporary, two years, with placement at the Institute of Biomedicine. First day of employment as agreed.
