The Department of Archaeology and Classical Studies at Stockholm University is the largest archaeological environment in Sweden and was in 2006 and 2014 appointed leading research area at Stockholm University. It consists of the six sections: Archaeology, Stockholm Numismatic Institute, Archaeological Research Laboratory, Osteoarchaeological Research Laboratory, Classical Archaeology and Ancient History, and Centre for the Study of Cultural Evolution. Both the research and the education at the Department comprise different areas and time periods.
Project description
The Archaeological Research Laboratory is looking for a postdoctoral researcher. The position is part of the "1000 ancient genomes" project financed by Knut & Alice Wallenberg Foundation. The main methodology used in the project is aDNA analysis of prehistoric tissue, mainly skeletons, this to address archaeological questions concerning e.g. demography. The research group working in this project is international and interdisciplinary.
Main responsibilities
The research concerns analyzing ancient genetic data collected with Next-Generation Sequencing. It is also expected that the successful applicant will participate in the daily activities at the Archaeological Research Laboratory and interact with other projects.
Qualification requirements
Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country. Relevant doctoral degrees are archaeometry, molecular biology, zoology, ecology or population genetics.
Assessment criteria
The degree should have been completed no more than three years before the deadline for application. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances, which may involve sick leave, parental leave, clinical attachment, elected positions in trade unions, or similar.
In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research skills and working experience from highly degraded human DNA and archaeogenetics. Experience with large-scale analyses of Next-Generation Sequencing data will be considered a merit, as well as an interest and knowledge in human population history. Good knowledge of written and spoken English is a prerequisite.
Because the position involves integrating with other research groups, personal skills such as, good collaborative and analytical skills, ability to work independently and take own initiatives, well-developed sense of responsibility and service mindedness, well-developed ability of oral and written communication are all considered as merits.
Terms of employment
The position involves full-time employment for one year, with the possibility of extension under special circumstances. Start date as per agreement.
