Based in a beautiful Nordic city, you will benefit from a competitive salary, a collaborative working environment, and strong ties to both academia and industry.
As part of our cross-functional team, you will have access to an unparalleled dataset from a quantum computer. This unique resource will enable you to conduct cutting-edge research with great impact. Chalmers is a great university for young researchers to grow, with ample opportunities for skills and career development. The team can also offer opportunities in teaching, supervision and proposal writing as part of career development.
Information about the project, the areas and the departments involved
The project aims to develop quantum or hybrid quantum/classical algorithms and demonstrate their computational advantages on transportation-related optimization problems. These algorithms will solve computationally challenging (combinatorial optimization) but practically relevant transportation problems (e.g., vehicle routing, task scheduling, traffic assignment, location routing). The intent is to advance applied quantum research for transportation science and engineering through method and software development.
While position 1 will propose new hybrid decomposition algorithms based on model-based methods for combinatorial optimization problems, position 2 will focus more on data-driven and machine learning inspired solutions such as bandit optimization or reinforcement learning. Through the WACQT QT Testbed @ Chalmers Next Labs, the team also has access to state-of-the-art quantum hardware to facilitate real-world implementation of innovative model-based or data-driven transport optimization approaches. The project is funded by Chalmers through the Transport Area of Advance and includes collaboration with the University of Gothenburg. The working language is English.
Position 1 will be shared between the Automatic Control Group (Department of Electrical Engineering) and the Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics (Department of Mathematical Sciences).
Position 2 will be shared between the Data Science and AI/Software Engineering Group (Department of Computer Science and Engineering) and the Applied Quantum Physics Group (Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience).
Main responsibilities
The main responsibilities of the postdocs are to conduct research and publish within the framework of the given project. We prefer self-motivated candidates who can work efficiently both independently and in a team. Good communication skills are essential, as you will be expected to present your research to a variety of stakeholders, either through presentations at conferences or through the publication of scientific papers.
Qualifications
The applicants should have a PhD degree in the area of applied quantum physics/computing, applied mathematics, computer science, operational research, optimization, statistics, machine learning, systems or control theory, or similar topics. The candidates must have their PhD degree in hand before their enrollment, but it is not required during the application. This means that graduating PhD students are also welcome to apply for the positions, but we expect the candidates to join us in the fall of 2025. Candidates who received their PhD degrees within the last three years will be prioritized.
Position 1:
• Background and experience with operational research and mathematical optimization (e.g., MILP and combinatorial optimization) are mandatory.
• Experience from applied quantum computing, AI, data-driven or machine-learning skills are meritorious.
Position 2:
• A background and experience with algorithms, machine learning are mandatory.
• Experience from applied quantum computing, operational research, mathematical optimization are meritorious.
Contract terms
These postdoc positions are for two years each, with the possibility of extending them to three years.
Application procedure
