We develop and apply advanced experimental and computational technologies to discover how biomolecules, living cells and organisms function and interact. We pioneer new methods for the prediction, prevention, diagnostics and treatment of diseases. We offer a PostDoc position in single molecule biophysics analysis of DNA repair. The position is part of an ERC consolidator grant awarded to Fredrik Westerlund to study repair of DNA double strand breaks. The postdoc will join a group at Chalmers with expertise in single DNA molecule analysis and fluorescence microscopy at a division with broad expertise in biochemistry, biophysics and cell biology.
Project description
Nanofluidic channels have been demonstrated to be a prominent tool for analysing DNA-protein interactions. DNA is stretched by confinement which means that no anchoring of the DNA is required. This means that we can readily studied DNA extracted from cells and that reactions occurring on DNA ends are readily accessible. We have used this methodology for a variety of different DNA-protein interactions. We will in this project focus on DNA-protein interactions involved in DNA repair and in particular repair of DNA double strand breaks.
We will complement the nanofluidic methods with other single molecule and bulk techniques, based on the interest and expertise of the candidate.
Information about the division and research group
The Chemical biology division is the home of seven research groups. We combine and develop protein engineering, synthetic chemistry, and state-of-the-art biophysical methods (spectroscopy, live cell imaging and nanotechnology to address cutting-edge questions in biology to meet medical challenges related to human health. Our joint expertise is strategic and spans from molecular biophysics of single molecules to cell and organism biology.
In the Westerlund BioNanoFluidics group we use nanofluidic devices to study biomolecules in general and DNA in particular. Our projects range from fundamental biophysics of DNA-protein interactions to analysis of clinical DNA, for example diagnostics of cancer and bacterial infections.
Major responsibilities
The postdoctoral candidate will work in his/her own research project, but be part of a larger research team in the Westerlund group that develop and use single DNA molecule techniques for DNA-protein interaction analysis.
Supervision of master and bachelor theses can also be part of the training. The position is meritorious for future research duties within academia as well as industry/the public sector.
Qualifications
To qualify for the position of postdoc, you must hold a doctoral degree awarded no more than three years prior to the application deadline (according to the current agreement with the Swedish Agency for Government Employers).
You must have a PhD degree in biochemistry, biophysics or similar.
Experience in DNA analysis, data analysis using Matlab or R, molecular biology, fluorescence microscopy, optical tweezers and nanofluidics is meritious.
The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. Swedish is not a requirement but Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
You are expected to be somewhat accustomed to teaching, and to demonstrate good potential within research and education.
You are expected to communicate well in English in both written and oral form.
Contract terms
This postdoc position is a full-time temporary employment for two years.
