PostDoc long title: Postdoctoral opportunity in synthetic organic chemistry with emphasis on photoredox catalysis, at CVMD IMED Biotech Unit, AstraZeneca Gothenburg Sweden
We're looking for a strong synthetic organic chemist to build on recent progress in in-house photoredox catalysis. Your challenge will be to develop more efficient and environmentally friendly chemical methodologies.
Advances in modern photoredox catalysis have enabled the development of a wide array of novel synthetic methodologies. Photoredox catalysis offers opportunities to enable straightforward access to previously unavailable transformations, so we're commonly applying photoredox catalysis and photochemistry in the development of new molecules in our drug research programs. Now we're aiming to expand on previous achievements in this field and elevate its role in drug development contexts.
Your experimental work will include the planning and execution of synthetic method development, specifically optimisation via screening of reaction components such as catalysts, solvents and preparation of building blocks. This may require the performance of mechanistic studies to understand the fundamentals of the reactions. You'll be expected to present your results internally and externally.
Working in a vibrant environment with multi-national, highly talented and motivated scientists, you'll contribute to a range of cutting edge scientific projects (including beyond small molecules). You'll gain extensive development opportunities in joint scientific meetings and will work in a state-of-the-art environment, equipped with a multitude of photo-reactors (batch and flow) and automated open access analytic- and preparative systems (NMR, LCMS, HPLC and SFC).
You'll need to be comfortable presenting data to various interested parties, as your research will involve collaboration with at least one external academic expert.
Essential requirements:
PhD degree in organic chemistry or a degree corresponding to a PhD and/or MD in a relevant subject area
Focus on organic synthesis during PhD studies or postdoctoral studies
Track record of driving innovative science, demonstrated by publications in high quality journals
Practical synthetic organic chemistry experience, including routine laboratory procedures
Strong organisational, communication and interpersonal skills
Analytical methods in organic chemistry: separation and purification (HPLC, column chromatography, macro- and microscale synthesis, mass spectrometry)
Use of modern NMR techniques for structural characterisation of organic compounds (interpretation of routine 1D and 2D spectra, practical experience with state of the art NMR equipment, documentation of spectral data)
Fluent English.
At AstraZeneca we believe in the potential of our people and you'll develop beyond what you thought possible. We make the most of your skills and passion by actively supporting you to see what you can achieve. We need great people who share our passion for science and have the drive and determination to meet the unmet needs of patients around the world. If you're curious about what science can do, then you're our kind of person.
As a world leader in cardiovascular and metabolic medicines, we're always working on innovative new drugs that will change lives across the globe. To make that happen, we've divided our small molecule research strategy into three priorities: cardiac regeneration, islet health in diabetes and diabetic nephropathy. You'll focus your efforts on making real progress toward slowing, stopping or curing some of the most aggressive diseases that face humanity today.
