At AstraZeneca, we believe in the potential of people who share our passion for science. By thinking boldly and working collaboratively to pursue discoveries beyond imagination, you'll develop further and faster than you thought possible. We'll complement your drive and determination to meet unmet patient needs around the world with the inspiration and opportunities to enhance your niche expertise and build your skills. So if you're curious about what science can do, come and make a difference.
Our Respiratory, Inflammation and Autoimmunity team offers definitive expertise to colleagues across the business. You'll help patients in areas with medical needs that aren't being fully met, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma and rheumatic disorders. Right now, we're a leading figure in inhaled drug development, and our new Inhalation Centre in Gothenburg, Sweden is set to extend that lead even further.
Main duties and responsibilities
This role focuses on the re-education of lung innate immunity by "pathological matrix" in chronic disease. Tissue imprinting is the process by which the microenvironment into which an immune cell moves confers phenotypic pressures. Immune cell control is key to effective resolution following infection/damage while avoiding autoimmunity. However, emerging data across multiple chronic diseases link dysregulation of this stromal:immune cell axis to the perpetuation of pathology.
You'll be part of a project that builds upon novel in-house discoveries/capabilities in 3D spheroid culture of disease matrix/stroma. It aims to determine the role of miR29 on matrix:fibroblast phenotype (we'll test agonists of miR29 species on healthy/COPD matrix + healthy/COPD fibroblasts; and investigate macrophage:stromal interaction (healthy versus disease), and the influence of miR29 agonism on phenotype and function.
Creative and entrepreneurial, you'll drive the project from Gothenburg, utilising state-of-the-art microscopy, imaging and molecular biology technology. You'll be supported by extensive respiratory expertise which extends beyond drug discovery into a vibrant postdoctoral network. The position is co-supervised by Prof Tracy Hussell (MCCIR, Manchester, UK), a leading light in the emerging field of tissue imprinting. Close interaction with the scientists from MCCIR will provide further support to pursue novel experimental ideas.
Essential requirements
PhD and/or MD in a relevant subject matter
Extensive experience in cell culture techniques, including RNA inhibition methods
Microscopy and imaging experience to assess cell phenotype/function
Molecular biology skills to assess gene expression (transcription versus translation).
Desirable requirements
In vivo skills and licence
Knowledge of fibrosis and immune biology.
