Department of Plant Protection Biology
Post-genomic effector mining and the role of silencing suppressors in oomycete-host interactions

Description:
This PhD project is part of a larger recruitment of 5 PhD students at SLU Alnarp, who will be embedded in Marie Sklodowska-Curie European Training Network PROTECTA (H2020-MSCA-ITN-2017-766048). PROTECTA will recruit 15 students to academic and industrial research PhDs across Europe to develop new and innovative ways to control oomycete diseases across the agriculture, environment, forestry and aquaculture sectors. We study selected oomycete pathogens and their hosts in multidisciplinary cross-sectoral projects. Students will be well connected to relevant industry mentors and undertake secondments at different locations in the consortium. The Department of Plant Protection Biology, at SLU, is an interdisciplinary constellation, encompassing Chemical Ecology, Resistance Biology and Integrated Plant Protection research units. Research efforts at the department are directed towards both fundamental and applied research. This PhD project aims for a large-scale quantification of effector gene expression and protein abundance during the infection process of oomycetes that infect diverse crop, tree and fish hosts. These data will be exploited for further basic and applied research within the consortium. The PhD student will work with molecular techniques, cytology, next-generation sequencing, advanced proteomics, bioinformatics, gene evolution analyses, biochemistry and plant pathology.

Qualifications:
Your background can be in a wide range of scientific areas such as microbiology, molecular biology, plant sciences, crop protection, biotechnology, and genetics. Skills in molecular plant pathology, bioinformatics and proteomics are merits. A strong command of written and spoken English is essential. Excellent collaborative skills, high motivation and enthusiasm are important, as well as ability to work both independently and in a team. Personal skills are therefore an important part of the evaluation. An interest in both basic and applied research is regarded as highly meritorious.
