Join us at Chalmers for a PhD project and make a significant contribution to advancing the theory of dynamics in quantum materials.
Information about the research
Complex materials are governed by a variety of degrees of freedom, such as lattice, orbital, and spin. Recent progress in experimental techniques and novel large scale facilities open up the possibility to dynamically alter such degrees of freedom and stabilize quantum phases which are not present in the equilibrium. This poses challenging and exciting questions to our understanding of transient phenomena in materials. We are searching for 1-2 candidates for a PhD project, to investigate light-induced phenomena in materials, mainly mediated by collective excitations such as phonons, magnons, and molecular torsions.
You will be part of the division of condensed matter and materials theory, performing cutting-edge research with a strong interplay of fundamental and applied aspects, ranging from sustainable energy to information technology. You join a newly established research group where you have the opportunity to contribute to the research profile based on your interests and experience, given the research area mentioned above.
In our research group we value an inclusive, supportive, and healthy working environment. To support strong candidates independently of their life-situation, flexible working hours and part-time work are possible. Furthermore, the position includes an annual health allowance for sport or other health related activities.
Major responsibilities
You perform theoretical research in the area of dynamics in quantum materials. Furthermore, you are active in joint work with national and international collaborators. This includes, e.g., presentations, discussions, as well as publications. Also, you present results at international conferences. You will be given the opportunity to widen your expertise through specialized courses or participating in international summer/winter schools. Moreover, you will be taking part in the supervision and teaching of Bachelor and Master students.
Qualifications
To qualify as a PhD student, you must have a Master's degree in physics or equivalent (or be in the process of completing a Master's degree). Interest in one of the following is considered a merit: non-equilibrium physics, group theory, ab initio materials modelling, quantum computing. A very good capability of communicating scientific results in English, both orally and in writing, is required.
Contract terms
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years.
