You will work on developing control algorithms all the way to performance assessment in test vehicles. The project combines theoretical aspects of control algorithms, experimental design, and benefit analysis with more practical aspects, such as implementation and real-world applications, in collaboration with project partners Volvo Cars and Autoliv.
About us
The project is located within the Division of Vehicle Engineering and Autonomous Systems (VEAS), with some collaboration from the Division of Vehicle Safety. VEAS is a research division with close ties to the local vehicle industry, conducting applied research that combines theoretical and experimental investigations. The divisions host a graduate school with a broad national and international network in both academia and industry.
About the research project
This project is set to explore so-called shared control between the driver of a car and the car's safety systems. By mechanically disconnecting the driver's steering wheel from the road wheel in a steer-by-wire system, a more advanced interplay between the driver and the car's safety systems can be investigated. The goal is to improve the safety systems of the vehicle by involving the driver to actively participate and accept the interventions. A key component in the project will be to practically test feasibility and assess the performance of algorithms and hypotheses in test track trials with prototype vehicles and human drivers. The position will include some travel to project partners and test tracks.
Who we are looking for:
• To qualify as a PhD student, you must have a Master's degree (masterexamen) of 120 credits or a Master's degree (magisterexamen) of 60 credits in Mechanics, Mechatronics, or Control or equivalent *
• You will need strong written and verbal communication skills in English
• Understanding (Courses in) programming, especially interaction with mechatronics systems
• A valid driving license
• Understand and be able to work with practical matters (test vehicles) to solve issues and problems
• for students with an education earned outside of Sweden, a 4-year Bachelor's degree is accepted.
The following experience will strengthen your application:
• human-machine interfaces and driver modelling
• Implementation of control algorithms in mechatronic systems
• Experimental design and statistical methods
• Vehicle testing and test methods involving human test subjects
What you will do
Take courses at an advanced level within the Graduate school of Machine and Vehicle Systems | Chalmers
As a PhD student, your primary responsibility is to conduct research in shared control using steer-by-wire technology. You will:
• Participate in the development of a new prototype vehicle
• Use accident statistics to derive test cases
• Develop strategies and algorithms for shared control
• Conduct vehicle testing with human test subjects on test tracks and prototype vehicles
• Perform a benefit analysis of the proposed algorithms using simulation.
• You will collaborate with researchers from Chalmers, Volvo and Autoliv
• You will take relevant courses to aid your investigations (corresponding to one year of full-time)
• You will be a teaching assistant in courses close to the project content (approximately half a year of full-time)
